). I'm not clear if that was in the '90 or '91 race, though, as the Pink Floyd video contains footage from both years. Love to see your pics from the event, especially any of the Gilmour or Mason cars.

Correct Chris, his navigator was female. The way I heard it his male nav got cold feet after stage 2 walked and she replaced. It was in the 1991 race.

La Carrera Panamericana is a road race that goes through colonial Mexico, which is very different from Baja. Think Italy. 5 star hotels and paved roads better than the states. Very different than the Baja events!

very well aware of the race over the years and all its publicity. my wrench works on a couple of the porsche entries.
g/friends dad is foaming at the mouth to go see it. i mean BADLY FOAMING AT THE MOUTH to go experience the race. my comment about baja was architecture/background dezert pics. been to mexico city as a kid and acupulco and matzatlan as an adult along w/guaymas and puerto penasco numerous times. our idea is to get to start line. get rental car. and follow race back up north. by hook or by crook we will do this. all of us have our passports, so the only problemo is making time. would also like to do cobre canon via choo choo train. |

Mark,
Awesome to see those photos of the Gilmour/O'Rourke Jag (and your 356!). Love to see any photos of 227 that you might have. I learned from Nick and John Dabbs (the builder of my car) that while the two Jags were supposed to be similarly equipped, Dave and Steve had actually utilized a 4.2 liter motor instead of 3.4. They had even gone to the trouble of grinding the castings off the block and making "new" ones from epoxy to make it appear to be a 3.4 ![]() Of course, there was some sneaky stuff on 227, as well

Here are some of my pix from last years race...what a blast. I prepared a '64 ghia with a high comp 1600. Hey at least was air-cooled and flat! Was actually a friggin blast to drive... we smoked a lot of the 356's in our class. I highly recommend doing it... the bonding with other racers, adversity of fixing broken a tranny and reindexing torsion bars with a crowbar and vice grips in a one-horse mexican town, hauling azz with immunity for 2000 miles though beautiful mexican countryside... priceless memories. Plan to do it again next year.

Yeah, that clip of bill in his 550 almost buying it (cows on one speed stage!) was all in a day of the carrera. Here's an in-car shot of us hauling-azz out of augascalientes behind two cool old French guys in a 928(!!!!) powered Studabaker. Those guy could drive that tank! Note the police holding traffic for us all, urging us to go faster... was like this the whole race.

"It was Dave driving. Steve broke his leg as he had braced himself against the bulkhead prior to the impact. The car then fell on its back. Says a lot for the roll hoop as they didn’t suffer any other injuries."
