Eagle Day is one spendy option
Too bad Pelican doesn't lay in some colored Euro wire in bulk... you might try a VW dealer also... Last edited by RWebb; 03-23-2008 at 03:39 PM.. |

Many of the original wiring harnesses with the correct colors, patterns, boots and end terminals are still available from Porsche; they are expensive.

I tried going trough the dealer the other day. The parts guy could not pinpoint the exact wire that I am looking for on the PET. The brown coil ground wire.

I think this is what you need:
Wurth http://www.wurthusa.com/project/en/leftnavi/catalog/product.php?path=03.0112.jpg Another choice is to go to a Porsche dismantler and get a wiring harness out of a car. Don’t expect them to remove it for you without paying a LOT. It is very difficult and time consuming. When you order an 'old' wiring harness from Porsche, they have it manufactured (one-off to original specs) specifically for you. You better get the correct part number because it is yours. Best, Grady

If you are looking for the single brown ground wire from the coil to the stud on fan shroud - I believe its number is 901.612.099.00 The cost is listed as $2.50.
Given the costs of the replacement wiring harnesses I suspect Porsche is now having them made them up one off as Grady states. However, six or seven years ago I ordered a new OEM engine wiring harness for my son's 73.5T and when it arrived we at first thought the wrong harness had been sent as there were too many wires. It turned out there were two correct identical harnesses tangled together which leads me to believe they were already made up and pulled out of a parts "bin". |

Thanks Jim. Can you tell me where you found this part # ? I looked it up on PET and don't see it.
Thanks again! -Patrick |

I found it in the 70-73, PET Main Group 9 Electrical equipment, Illustration 902-10, position (item) 23. This individual wire is also shown in the illustration for engine wiring harness pieces in the same section in the 74-77 PET but without a part number. 1974 may have been a transition year; my '76 has this brown coil ground wire molded into a female connector that plugs over both coil terminals and the wire is incorporated into the engine wiring harness.
Here is an image from a 1973.5 911T of what I believe is the 901.612.099.00 wire:

Thanks again Jim. I called the dealer today and unfortunately this part is NLA.
I will have to make one. I wonder what the gauge of this wire is.....hmmm. -Patrick Last edited by PatrickM; 03-24-2008 at 06:26 PM.. |

I bought my wiring from Eagle Day and it's no where near the OEM wiring in color. When I bought they listed all the colors but then mysteriously all they sent were green wires with various colored stripes
. I'd just buy brown wire from a marine supply.

I had to replace my blue wire (alternator D+ I think) because the stupid P.O. broke it at some point and spliced on some half-assed thing that was just draped over the top of the engine shroud rather than bundled in with the rest of the wires like it should have been. IIRC it was 14 ga (I think the brown one is too) and I was able to find blue insulation wire only after scouring a few different places (including two Fry's - their selection was surprisingly not that good). Soldered on the correct harness end and "loop" end and pulled it through the bundle. Voila! Good, if not better than factory and I doubt any concours judge would ever be able to tell.
At the end of the day, it's just wire. As far as locating the brown color, try this site: http://www.youdoitelectronics.com They're located in Boston - I used to go in there as a kid. FANTASTIC place. They have everything imaginable for the DIY-er including "little stuff" like wire, fuses, project boxes, etc. A lot of amateur radio guys go there, which is a good endorsement. If they don't have it, I imagine they could get it. They were my next phone call before I found my blue wire locally. EDIT: Here's their "wire" listings - I'd call them about 14 gauge brown. http://www.youdoitelectronics.com/id613.htm

So basically we are on our own when it comes to figuring out a decent replacement. Find a decent wire source, colors and gauge close to factory.
Gather the terminals and heat shrink and build what we need. Thanks for everyone's input. -Patrick |

Well, I am not sure how this can be considering I talked to my local Porsche dealer today and was told that the ground strap for the coil is NLA....After poking around on Pelican I found the strap. Here is the part # and description. We'll see if I get it.
item 23 OEM-90161209900 Ground strap, ignition coil, terminal, 1 - Brand: Genuine Porsche 1 $2.50 http://www.pelicanparts.com/PartsLookup/HTML/911_USA_70_73_KATALOG/902-10-Frame4.htm -Patrick |
