heat exchange gasket question

Hello, I have a 1892 SC, and am about to embark on oil return tube replacement. If I get into a situation and need to remove my heat exchanger(s), can I re-use the existing gaskets, or should I replace them with new? Also, are there any other gaskets needed associated with heat exchanger removal that should be replaced with new?

any input on this would be appreciated

thanks,

Bill

Hey Bill! Yes, you'd need to replace the HE gaskets and if you removed the muffler, also the muffler/HE gaskets. But, you shouldn't really need to remove the HEs for the job. I've done it with them in place. It is a PITA, but very doable.

Agree with Dave- try with them on. Besides if the HE's have never been off before, you run a very real risk of breaking some of the exhaust studs which will be a LOT more work than just taking your time to replace the return tubes with the HE's in place. I assume you're talking about using collapsable return tubes?

Yes, you can replace tubes and covers with the HEs on. Tubes will suck but covers will be fairly easy.
