My slightly improved/modified 1984 M491. What interest me in this post is the COA that states Special order metallic paint? Mine also has that designation, but it is not metallic . But it is not Guards Red. No orange tone, very deep Red.

I rather like that red. Any paint code sticker in the frunk? My '84 is labeled "Indischrot" and there appears to be some debate over what the actual color it is, depending on the year...I'm also going by a half-torn sticker on a car that has been repainted, so who knows for sure...

Is it possible someone cut the targa roof off, added a wide body with turbo brakes all around, power top and added a turbo 3.3 engine??

doesn't make alot of sense to me??

Yeah, it is possible. A lot of people did stuff to these cars back in the day that did not make sense. As far as modifications go, yours is pretty extreme. Good news is that it sounds like they used a bunch of high dollar Porsche parts. Way better than the Strosek-bodied V8 swaps some people did.

Sorta looks like my 87 cherry rot, aka carmine red coupe.

Or was the car stolen and identification tags switched? I have not run a carfax. For the past 9 years I thought I was a proud owner of a real supercar, our beloved 930. As we all know life sometimes can get in the way and attempting to trade the alleged 930 on a new RV the mixup was discovered. Perhaps the best route is to strip and sell parts. Hate to consider because she really rocks

Probably should get it to a local Porsche specialist and have them verify what you actually have.

If that document on page one is correct I have a friend who must never see it. He had a 1986 M491 Targa. White on blue. Put a 930 engine in it with 400WHP. Sold the car dirt cheap about 10 years ago. He tried to find it about 5 years ago but it appears to have fallen off the face of the earth. Last known owner was in NC...

For those readers who might want more, I wrote an article, about one of the two 1984 M 491 Cabriolets, that appeared in the Feb 2012 issue of Excellence Magazine. I do not know how the archive system for that publication's articles work; and if you need to be a subscriber to access them, but the effort to access this one might produce a worthwhile read for M 491 owners.

Here's some pics of mine, Rancho, La Jolla Shores, etc...

Frank - any pros and cons that you considered when replacing your cabrio top with a newer style?

I have some wear and tear on my cabrio top, and while its not urgent, I may consider a replacement. I can't decide if I prefer the original look vs the newer 993 style top that you have. Same price? Fits the same frame hardware? Where did you have it done?

The previous owner installed the 993 style convertible top. Pics here... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/900661-dear-po-i-really-wish-you-hadnt-im-glad-you-did.html ...and per that post, I'm glad the PO opted for 993 style. I wouldn't have had the guts to go non-original. It is a much cleaner design that makes for a flowing "roof line" into the rear decklid. Less flaps and such. I very much prefer the cleaner design of the 993 style. To the best of my knowledge, price is similar and it fits the existing frame. I can look up the receipt, but it was done in San Diego.

Speaking of convertible tops, I just sourced the parts to convert my power top to full manual operation. I'm very much looking forward to the simple life.

I also just sourced a black deck-lid and tea tray tail for those days when I'm feeling a bit more shouty than the M470 option affords. My inner eighteen year old is pretty fired up.

Those wheels

Retro,

I've got to know about those wheels. Finish? Width? Offset? Do you run spacers, they look like they were made for the car.

I have an '84 Silver M-491 Coupe , I'm running Euromeister 9's and 7's w/spacers....

Those are just beautiful, love the stance.

Thanks Scott

Anyone still following this thread? I just picked up a one owner 87 M491 with 60k miles. Looks 100% original except for the addition of a tail and what looks like some cosmetic respray on the rear panels. Any thoughts?
