PMO50, SC distributor or recurve the 3.2 distributor
Hello,
I am putting PMO50 in my 3.2 and I either find the used 1978 SC distributor or send my old 3.2 distributor to be recurved by Barry Hershon. The problem is that I live in Thailand. Which way should I go? 1) Buy a used SC distributor from this forum? What's the cost of the good used distributor? 2) Send my 3.2 to Barry but have to pay shipping twice. Would it be any advantage to have Barry works my 3.2 distributor to match with my engine spec? Here's the detail on my engine. 1984, 3.2 U.S. spec -Ported and polished -compression ratio 9.3:1, 95mm -964 cams -Sport headers (equal length) -Non catalytic -M&K muffler 2 in 1 out Thanks

You will need to have your 3.2 distributor recurved. The SC dizzy turns the opposite direction and the crank gear is incompatible. ARe you keeping the Motronic for the advance curve? The 3.2 dizzy does not have a trigger mechanism in it. Timing is taken from the flywheel reference sensor.

Jamie,
Thanks for reply. This what I found on PMO website. Note: On 1975 and later cars, the Early Style Exhaust System is needed. 911 SC Distributors should be recurved. MSD ignition boxes are recommended. For ignition questions, contact Barry at IAE, 313-532-5350. Barry is the premier rebuilder and recurver of 911 Bosch distributors. Rick Clewett (310-406-8788) puts together an excellent crank fire ignition system for all model years. For DME-Motronic engines ('84-'98), Barry can modify the existing distributor(s) to function like 911 SC distributors and fire MSD 6AL ignition boxes (#6420). The MSD Blaster high vibration ignition coils (#8222) are mandatory. In my case, I intend not to use the DME box. Is this why PMO recommend to have the 3.2 distributor modified?

I do not think a 3.2 Distribuitor has any provision for a trigering mechinizum. That is handled by the crank sensor and ECU.
A Carrera distribuitor I think has a set of weights in it to keep the rotor lined up correctly as the ECU advances the spark with gains in RPM. If you are going use an aftermarket ignition you will need a crank sensor or you can add a sensor wheel to your Carrea distribuitor to drive your ignition. Other wise going to a SC style system may be best. I am not sure if they turn the same direction though. 50mm carbs sound kind of big for a 3.2 unless full race buy I am not an expert. |
