I new that I had followed that build thread when I read about the car.
Nice work, Mark. Nice to see more Pelican members featured in the magazine.

Thanks Rich... thanks Billy. The modesty is fake--I'm an unremitting self-promoter... yes sir.
It's great to be in Excellence magazine--I've enjoyed it for many years. It's also kind of neat to have the article posted online which is done to only a select few. The car has changed quite a bit since it was photographed for the issue. Here's a recent iphone shot of my bud Jerry's Carrera Speedster in the foreground, and one with my other bud Yale's '70 S--both those cars are many clicks above my little hotrod. And here's a shot of my first time at Willow Springs. The odometer is at nearly 215,000 -- I've put over 24,000 miles on it since I bought it and hope that can continue. I've had it all over the east coast and even in California a couple of times. It's so much of a blast to drive and that's definitely the best thing about these cars, and this car in particular -- IT IS DRIVEN and enjoyed to the max. ![]() ![]()

May I ask how you like the fender mounted mirror?
It looks great. Just wondering if it also provides sufficient view to the rear. |

Here's the deal with the 550 Spyder style mirror. I can see quite a bit more than I expected to see before mounting it. And yes... its not as much as you might be used to with a conventional door mirror.
To make up for the visual deficit I had a Wink rearview mirror installed... the kind that covers the entire width of the windshield. These things are great with one exception. They're not good when you're on the race track. Your helmet obscures a large percentage of your rear view. The reason for the 550 mirror was simply because I saw another 911 hot rod with one and I loved the look.

Its hard to believe how much time has past since I started this thread and how quickly it goes. Reality has sunk in lately with me needing hip replacement surgery and passing the age of 65. Its just crazy but now I'm able to collect Social Security and continue to work so now I'll be able to finish my 914-6 hot rod project that's been collecting dust at ROCS for several years.
I recently attended the Targa Carolina with the 911. We met some great people like Todd Holbert. Tod had his wonderfully sublime 356 with awesome patina. Todd is the son of racing legend Al Holbert and is Porsche royalty in my book. He's a great guy too. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Hey Mark,
Your car was one of my earliest influences when I started in on my backdate. Turned out to be a pretty slippery slope, it's now pretty much indistinguishable from a 73S, with a 3.2SS MFI motor. Thanks for the inspiration way back when!!

What an enjoyable build thread. Just did the full 18 page read in past 8 hrs. I can see why this car has been inspirational to other hot rod builds since 2009 or so! Your 911 is oh so right. Hope to see it somewhere soon on the Right Coast.
