Fuel Filter Replacement Question....

I want to replace my fuel filter and was wondering how much fuel will I lose when I disconnect the fuel filter? Any precautions or tips on doing the job? TIA Andrew

I didn't experience large amounts of escaping gas when I changed mine. Was sure to place many rags underneath the connection points......it wasn't that bad at all.

Best,

Doyle

What Doyle said...very little gas to deal with and a few shop rags strategically placed will take care of that. I remove the top connection first.

+1 with the rags.
And use 2 wrenches to counter-hold when opening the cap nuts to prevent distorting the lines.
I use a felt to mark the new filter with date and Mileage.

I was just about to change the fuel filter on my 1979 911sc, but noticed the new part (when oriented physically like the existing filter) has arrows pointing in the opposite direction. Did the folks at Pelican parts send me the wrong filter? Should I ignore the arrows and install physically like the existing one. Thought this was going to be a 5 minute job, but now I'm confused....thanks for some help.

jnietling:

The year doesn't help necessarily.

There has been a real confusion with gas filters because Porsche changed the sizes around 1980. SC's can have a small filter or a big like yours but the fittings are the problem.
Some filters have different fittings like male/male, male/female, female/male, female/female.

The fuel goes to the Accumulator first, then through the filter.

You need to observe the direction of flow and may have to remove the fittings from the old filter and install them into the new one.

The filter I use is a Mahle KL 22 (PP part # 128-110-147-05-M67)

928-110-147-05-M67 Fuel Filter, (Mahle) 911 (1981-83)
Brand: Mahle Filter [Photo] [Photo] $21.00

It's the bigg filter like yours and I re-use the fittings as explained above.
This Mahle has a male fitting on top for the cap-nut in the line and a female fitting on the bottom which I change to a male fitting from the old filter for the cap-nut in the line.

See if you can use the fittings from the old filter to make the new one fit.
Keep the direction of flow.

Thanks for the great feedback. I pulled the old filter, and the fittings do NOT work in the new one (actually, only one does). So, I have to assume that I have the wrong replacement filter. The part Pelican shipped me was Bosch 0 450 905 079......my existing filter is Bosch 0 450 905 016. I'll try to track down the right filter, or the Mahle one you mention below. Thanks again.

Reviving a very old thread in case it helps someone else.* My 1980 still had the 450 905 016 filter on it when I got the car.* Bosch no longer makes the -016 filter, it's been replaced with 450 905 021.* The problem is the outlet changed from 14mm to 12mm so the original fitting of 14mm male to the 16mm inverted male for the fuel line won't work.* It took me awhile to figure out that you need to order fitting 930-110-199-00-OEM that has the correct 12mm male outlet to 16mm male inverted flare for the fuel line.* Hope this helps someone else.

For maximum fuel spillage replace filter immediately after a long drive. Lol.
Do it after the cars sits overnight or half a day or so.
