1974 Porsche 911
I am not a fan of the 1974 Porsche 911. If properly rebuilt they could be OK but those 2.7 engines were trouble from the very beginning. The machine work on this rebuilt motor would dictate everything regarding the purchase along with possible rust issues. Re-sale of this model is poor at best.
A 911SC could be purchased for the same amount of money, it will have the 3.0 motor which has a superlative durability record and your ability to re-sell it in the future would be excellent. Mechanically the SC is just a much better car. That is my opinion - good luck |

A mid year car, made to look like an SC clone, but with the 2.7 (from the wrong year), and priced more than an SC.
Umm, yeah. |

That is a beautiful car. As for the flares this is in the ad " Factory Optioned 911 Coupe with Carrera Flares." Unfortunately for that price you could find an SC is similar condition. But if you like this car and the dealer has the receipts for all the work, including a proper engine rebuid) including case inserts, I would consider buying it.

In the ad it states that it has "Aluminum Turbo Trailing Arms". I thought that the Turbo rear suspension used a totally different mounting point on the body than regular 911. The turbo was more inward and higher up than the normal 911 correct? They did this to help in rear end squat, if I remember..
It looks nice but...as others stated I would take that amount of money and either buy SC or 84 up Carrera.. But hey it's your money and life so live it however it makes you happy.. Gregg

There are some obvious inaccuracies and vagaries in that ad, not huge deals.
But for that same money, it seems like something like this is a much better car (just by example): http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?t=495425 $18K is a good chunk of change in the big bumper 911 world these days. |

"If properly rebuilt they could be OK but those 2.7 engines were trouble from the very beginning"
boy im sure glad my 74 911 wasnt in class the day THAT memo was circulated, otherwise i dont think i would have been able to get the 300,000 miles out of my little 2.7...... yes that read 300.000 miles.... and NEVER opened up...... i have since replaced that engine with another.... yup.... 2.7 and its runs pretty damn strong. if you like that grey beauty i say go for it... even though it is just a 74 2.7 ![]() |

74 911
Picture of the engine would tell you alot. How the engine bay is treated in any restoration always seems to be vital to how the overall car was done. Very odd not to include engine pics, IMHO

Maybe it's just my eyes but... Something looks amiss with the alignment of the front of the hood to the bumper. Likewise with the left side right in front of the head lamp.

1974 2.7 CIS engines are the most reliable of the 1973 - 1977 2.7 mag case engines (which includes the 1973 2.7RS and 1974-75 Euro Carrera). 300K on a 1974 engine is a remarkable feat - probably lots of good, faithful maintenance there. For $18K or so, I agree with everyone else in this thread, you can get a good SC for about the same money.
I've seen really nice 1974-77 cars with 3.0 transplants go for cheap. Those are the good deals of the Porsche world - there's nothing wrong with the 1974-77 cars except for those relatively weak mag cases. -Wayne

Hey,
The body aside, the engine has what appears to be SSIs, and turbo valve covers, I couldn't see evidence of oil fed tensioners though. I do agree, if you want a SC look alike, get an SC and the few hundred pounds extra they carry. 18K is a lot for a mid year with so many "additions", I got my '75 for 10K and the engine had been rebuilt(with all of Waynes recommendations from his book) and the car had 149K on the odometer. 8K will buy me a lot of "extras" Search around, eBay will not be your best price, craigs list has the best deals. Autotrader is good also! eric

I paid about the same 2 years ago for my 84 cab, with almost exactly 100K on it. All stock with no mods, so would agree with the others than you could get an SC/Carrera in this market for the same money. But.. that's only if you want a newer one :-) Do what you want, they are all fun cars!

exactly. It's a clean looking car in the pictures, but is a "Frankenporsche," and not in a great way: '74 chassis, made to look like a 78-83 SC, with a '75 engine, for a 84-89 Carrera price.

I think the 18K price encroaches on a 3.2 which would be a much, much, much better car!

Couple of nits:
Fog lamp switch but no lamps. What's with the yellow (Gobi?) paint near the fuse box? (The lunch-box latch is cool, however) But the real question is the history. Obvously someone put a lot of money in the interior and engine rebuild and, presumably paint. And before the new engine even gets dirty it's on ebay - from dealer to boot. I'd want to talk to the owner before bidding and certainly would want to know who did the engine work. The rest of the mechanicals and undercarriage look consistent with car that's not been particularly pampered. Note the new or completely rebuilt calipers. So maybe the resto was a labor of love and the owner ran out of momentum or money? Too many questions for me. A complete and well documented history is the first thing to look for and the only thing that can't be restored if it doesn't exist. Ron

Thats a decent car for the right price...but 18k is not the right price, I would say more like 11k, the pictures look like it has a heavy undercoating which could be good or could be hiding monsters.
