Bob Woodman Tire

I don't know if anyone on Pelican has ever taken advantage of Bob's services, but I really feel like I have to post something about just how great this guy is.

Woodman Tire is in Beaufort, SC, about 45 minutes north of me here in Savannah. I have been bringing my SC to the local Porsche dealership, until someone at a DE recommended that I see Bob for lowering the car and setting it up for the track. So I did.

What an experience! First of all, Bob's a PCA driving instructor, it turns out, and is a nut about air-cooled 911s. He races a 79-bodied ex-IROC car. And wins. He was the old guy in the 30-year-old car that beat the field at the Hilton Head "historic" race that included Caymen cup cars and race-prepped 997's. His wife runs a 68 S in the red group at our DEs. Anyhoo...

I brought my SC to Bob to have it lowered and corner balanced. He had a variety of setups available - I told him I intended to run it at Roebling the upcoming weekend, and he picked out the setup. Off I went to Beaufort to hang out and wait.

Late that afternoon when the car wasn't done (something about bolts not being touched for 26 years), Bob gave me a car to drive home, and arranged to drop the car off at my office. An hour away. What I didn't know at that point was that he was still building his own engine for the HHI historic race, and my little job set him back many hours.

Well he finished my car to a fair-thee-well, then:

1. worked on his car into the wee hours of the morning
2. got a few hours' sleep
3. got my car back to me the next morning
4. drove to the HHI historics race
5. and won it!

That would be a good enough story, but there's more. He insisted that I run the car at the Roebling Road DE for the weekend, before he would accept a penny from me. This was the day after the race he won - he went from the podium to the DE to work as an instructor.

Bob has been the most easy-going, down-to-earth guy I've ever worked with. He'll be the only guy to touch my car going forward, that's for sure. There's more little things, like the hard 3rd-4th upshift that I was told the engine-tranny had to be dropped for, that Bob diagnosed as a 15 minute fix. And him stopping me from coil-overs that he would make a mint on, when a torsion bar upgrade would be all that my Targa could handle and more.

Sorry for the long post, but this is one of the good guys, and in this economy the good guys need all the help we can give them.

+ 1,000 Bob and his wonderful staff are the reason why I finally got my front rim halves in time to make these 20 bolt BBS magnesium centers back on the road in a crunch! I should clarify, they're a setup for a 17 x 11 front wheel running a 315...talk about hard to come by parts, but they found them and had them to me in NO TIME!

Thanks to Bob and his wonderful shop they can continue to dominate and wow everyone that sees them.

If I need ANYTHING BBS it comes from Bob, period.

Bob's definitely something special. I talked to him several days ago, after he'd been out of the "office" for a couple of weeks. Turns out he was in South America and in Spain, at two Ferrari events. I don't hold it against him
