Correct me if I am wrong, but I do remember seeing photos of an early 911 having some kind of rain shield under the rear bonnet.
I just finished my ac/ rear blower delete, and working on backdating the heat.

FWIW I haven't had any issues yet. Been driven in rain and washed a couple of times.

Thanks for the answers mca, John, Drew! I guess it's fine then. Gosh... don't even remember how it was driving my old bug 30 years ago through it all with those vent holes.

AC removal or not
I am the tinking of removing mine as well. It is a ROW nonsunroof - crank window coupe. I have the sensor near the rear view mirror and switches in the console, is this factory stuff or added here in America? It looks like a PO had upgraded the system as I have a Sanden compressor and another condenser in the left rear tire area and maybe newer barrier hoses. The system is inoperative as it has been in the six years I've had it so no AC is not so bad here in N.Y.. So if it will take too much to repair it's a no brainer, I'll remove it completely. Nothing works but the compressor still is turning with its belt, and a non factory wire run to it in the harness and fused. The rear wheel well condensor fan wires are just hanging under the car not hooked up, and the rest I have not investigated.
Here are a couple of pics if someone can id the hoses as newer barrier hoses and fittings that might be worth repairing and converting to r134. If the system is 90% there I might fix it if not away it goes. Terry ![]()

Sweet, a ROW no-sunroof w/ window cranks? If ever there were a 911 from that era destined to be a lightweight, that would be it! Save the car from the curse of its GT-lovin' previous owner and help it realize its destiny!

My sentiments John, light weight = faster, better mpg, and handling. Not sure what to do if the system is new and needs minimum. If it is a patch work of fixes to keep it going I will cleanly remove it in its entirety.
I had the car 6 years and very few days I didn't want to use it due to hot weather. What is the backdated heat. I haven't reinstalled the heat tubes for some time and I never had any blower working ever. Not used in the cold ever. This car will now be used often ,as I got the wife a new ride and now the SC is all mine to use. She barley lets me drive any of her cars. It took the new car for me to have this one. Here is another AC hose pic if anyone can ID it as maybe being leaking or barrier hose. Thanks - Terry ![]()

I'm currently living in Nevada...and boy does it get hot in the summer. The problem though, is that the a/c doesn't get cold enough to justify using it. And even cracking the windows...it still gets blazing hot to the point where I don't like driving the car. Nasty showing up to work all sweaty.
I would love to just rip the system right out for all the benefits mentioned. But on the other hand, I sure wish I had a cooler car to drive. Any opinions to that? Someone mentioned a while back that if I get the systems recharged more than once a year, it would make a difference...but I haven't gotten around to experiment.

Terry,
Your a/c setup is looking weirder with every picture! What kind of shorty "rear" condensor is that? For both you and Kaliv, it is my understanding there are some a/c systems out there for the 911 that reportedly work better than the factory one (e.g., Griffiths, Rennaire, etc.) if a/c is a must. For my part, I just can't see how the two, tiny vents in my console dash are going to turn the tide on a really hot day even if the system is working! '86-'89 3.2s had the a/c venting changed a bit, so they may be better under such circumstances. I guess if I lived in a hotter climate, I'd probably have a targa, backdate the side windows with pre-SC vents, buy a good hat and sunscreen, and shower often! To this end, I may end up backdating to side window vents in my coupe, but it's down on my to do list at moment.

Yes, the a/c systems in 964s are considered to work better, as long as they've been mantained.

I read this thread and put the task on my list. Pretty much finished except for the holes in the smugglers box. Both of the long lines were split; my contention is that the mechanic didn't lower the lid when he filled it with R12, he claims that the hoses were old and couldn't handle the pressure.
Anyway, it was easier than I thought it would be, I doubt I will ever regret it - it just seems to be more trouble than it's worth, and the engine bay sure looks better without that junk in there. (Fun bonus - the engine lid opens a lot faster without hoses to cause excess friction.)

You guys have me sold - so is there a thread on exactly how to remove OR do I go in and search and yank?
My A/C has never worked - and I have a targa top. I may just go the compressor / condensor route - but would love some instructions to follow.

you can do a search to see if there is an instruction thread....just follow the hoses....remove everything they are attached to.....including the hoses

Just saw this post. Just finishing a complete removal this winter. Quick question, is there a need to cover up the opening left on the engine? Seems to me i saw a picture somewhere of a factory A/C delete, and the bracket was different.

+1 for removal. I took mine out the winter before last. Never even think about it. Of course, here in MN I'm searching for the heat on early mornings in June.
How much work is the back dated heater? |

Hey John, thanks for the inspiration!! This has been on my list to do as the PO said it worked marginally so he never used it. So today, I went out and removed the big heavy easy stuff. VERY heavy unit, so I'm glad it's gone! Next is to remove the mounting shelf and then all of the lines front to back.
Then on to backdating the heat! Again, thanks for the inspiration! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

For those who have completely removed their A/C systems, did you remove the front condensor protective bar and pan as well? Any point in having the bar and/or pan in place for underside protection, or are these just dead weight, too?
Also, has anyone installed an air distributor bracket (e.g., 91157103900; 91157103901) to divert fresh air to the center vents? Any tips for that project?

My car is low, I've used that bar a time or two. Powdercoated it black and put it back on. The pan as well.

FYI: Everything is off, and here are the weight savings (in lbs):
compressor 23.4 rear condensor 6.0 mounting brackets 5.2 evaporator 10.2 receiver/dryer 1.6 front condensor 2.2 front blower 1.4 hose brackets 1.8 hoses 9.2 total 61.0 lbs I'm keeping the front condensor protective bar & pan (1.8 lbs) in place.
