I think I've got it here, have a look, comment if you like....

1952 America roadster-----predecessor to the speedster
1964 carrera "gts" type 904
1969 911 s coupe/targa
1973 911 sc carrera rs
1976 930 turbo-carrera

classic.....
1 : serving as a standard of excellence :
2 : characterized by simple tailored lines in design year after year.
3 : historically memorable
4 : Authentic...
5 : Simple in design yet effective in execution......

Porsche has and remains to be the embodiment of all the above. The design philosophy has endured and is historically significant and successful , both in competition and personal enjoyment.....Two thumbs up to Ferry the Professor!!!!!

I think 'classic' in this sense refers to something that is well-known and may have started some type of long-lasting trend. This would be different from my list of most desireable Porsches. Here's my list of classics in no particular order:

1. 1967 911S - the first fast 911.
2. 1973 911RS - the ultimate normally aspirated 911 and first to feature the now well-known 'Carrera' script graphics and ducktail spoiler.
3. 1975 911 Turbo - started an industry-wide turbo revolution and became an automotive icon due to the infamous 'whale tail'.
4. 550 Spyder - James Dean, 'nuff said.
5. 911 Targa - instantly recognizable. The first of its kind in 1965, a semi-convertible design copied by dozens of other manufacturers, including today's C5 Corvettes!

Thumbs up

Cegerer:

I really like that last picture on the first "Gray Wolf" page! The most I ever brought home from an F1 race was a hat, sunburn, and pictures (mostly of hot F1 groupies).

Maybe it's forum bias, but I can't believe how many people haven't mentioned the very car Keith is posing with - the 914-6! My list:

1957 356 Speedster
1967 911S
1971 914-6
1973 911 2.7RS
1977 930 Turbo

1- 356 Carrera GT

2- 55 Speedster

3- 1970 914-6

4- 1973 RS

5- 1976 930 Turbo

and of course the "soon-to-be" classic 1988 Club Sport (why can't I have one??)

I, too, think of road cars when someone asks "classic Porsche"?

So, here are my top cars --
1. '65 356 Cabriolet
2. '67 911S
3. '78 911 Turbo
4. '83 911SC Targa (like you wouldn't assume this car would be on the list, eh?)

Cheers!

C.

Hello

1.) 959
2.) 356 C Coupe
3.) 914/6
4.) 924 GT
5.) RSK/RS60 ( 718 )

why ?

1.) Best daily driver ever. Just a simple 911 inside. Even a new 996TT can´t follow.
2.) Just love. More car isn´t needed.
3.) Just love. Maybe the best Porsche value for money ever, sure the best VW made.
4.) Just love. OK a 944 Turbo S is better in most aspects untill you hit them on the race track.
5.) The car is much better then the 550 plus it competet in nearly all classes ( including Formula 2 ) and pissed even more competive cars ( including Formua 1 ) of. Maybe the early peek in Porsche motorsports before Piech came.

Not surprising seeing as I write that column and started this thread! Hope you like it - wait till next month's column – it'll upset some of the restorers!

Now this sucks! I just got the December issue last Thursday at Borders! I swear they get them in and just leave them on the dock until they feel like putting them up.

Speaking of Porsche mags - gee, do you think anyone will review the new Targa?

Thanks, Keith, for involving us in your "classic" Porsches discussion. Your magazine is one of my favorites. Can't wait to read the reader's comments you receive ........ no one here would argue with your 917 choice!

The March 2002 issue of 911 & PORSCHE WORLD just arrived in the mail and Keith Seume's article reveals the UK tally of the "Top Five Classic Porsches" that we all voted on earlier:

1. 1973 2.7 Carrera RS
2. 356 Speedster
3. 550 Spyder (tie with)
4. pre-'74 911S
5. original 930 Turbo

Hey, I think alot of us picked these the first time!

The rest:

6. 904 GTS (tie with)
7. 917
8. 993 Turbo S
9. 356 coupe (tie with)
10. 914/6

Better late then never...

#5) 356 Speedster: It spite of the fact that it didn't look like anything before or since and not that many were made, somehow it became an icon. That sounds like a classic.

#4) 911SC: Where the earlier 911's were sort of specialist cars, the SC really made the 911 accessable to the masses and became synonymous with "Porsche" to the world over. (Gosh, I sound like a member of the SCWDP, don't I )

#3) 917K: Show a picture of it to just about anyone the world over, it they'll most likely say "Le Mans". It came to define Porsche's steam roller reputation in Racing.

#2) 935-78: The ultimate 911. In befor it there had come other great 911's (Such as the Carrera 2.7 and 930), but the 935-78 came to be the high point of Porsche's creative interpretation of the FIA's rules. It was just too wild. Only 2 factory cars were made, but it was widely copied. Since then racing Porsche's have just been Porsche's built to the rules, the -78 was an excercise in going to the limit.

#1) 1964 911: You can't build something in one form or another for almost 40 years and not call it a classic.

A wise and astute choice, John!
So much so, I'll be pleased to send you some *complementary* SCWDP stickers. Just send your mailing address to my e-mail.
(And try to ignore the flames from your fellow early-birds. They don't have nearly as much fun as we SCWDP'ers )
