3.2 intake
everybody seems to go on about exhaust and muffler for a 3.2 motronic engine.
how good are things on the intake side? I know the "cold air" filters are not better, and MAF sensors are expensive for the amount of power they deliver over stock. what are the possiblities for improving the stock intake? |
Years ago there was a lot of porting and polishing done on them.
What would be done is cutting each side in half, right through the word PORSCHE, then port, polish and weld back together. I havent seen this done in 15 years but I was out of the loop for several Bruce |
The stock intake is as good as it gets. Minimal gains can be had by smoothing the manifold innards, and the MAF would flow better than the barn door, but there's not much there without changing the whole shootin match.

interesting. was there any marked advantage from it? or is the intake pretty well done from the factory?

Factory did the best, right down to the airbox cover. Most will make less horsepower with a modified (opend) cover. The choke point on these motors is on the bottom. That's why so many go on and on about exhaust/mufflers/headers, etc.

There are gains in the fuel maps, and timing, and those are obvious first choices when optimizing these motors. The best changes come with a comprehensive approach to the chip maps and exhaust setup.

so the next step is the cylinder heads and cams. are there gains there on a stock displacement 3.2?

Usually you extrude hone the intake to even up the flow - minimal increase - especially if you are optimizing. As others have said - Porsche did the top right. Any gains that don't cost cubic dollars are found in the chip and the exhaust.
On the cam front - depends on your delivery More aggressive and you run out of room with the motronic - so probably something similar to 993 SS cams and you can still maintain and idle. Get more aggressive and you need to switch to PMO's or ITB's. Then of course you need to worry about piston to valve contact so switch out the pistons and cylinders too. |
it is what I figured. maybe something to look at down the road. juust rebuilt the engine so I have plenty of enjoyment before I need to upgrade anything!

Porsche designed several intakes, including the 3.2, to actually compress air at higher rpm. That means you get more air going into the cylinders than the actual displacement. As for modifying the intake? Move along, nuthin to see here folks.

If you plan to spin the motor beyond the factory stock limiter, you should replace the rod bolts with ARP racing bolts. The Carreras were reduced to 9mm bolts which have seen issues when revved too high.
