Antennae ideas

I am nearly finished my body work on my 911 and getting close to paint. While going through my boxes of parts I realized that my antennae (manual) was still sitting in one of the boxes. I installed new fiberglass fender and am not sure if i want to drill into them. Has anyone had any luck with leaving it say under the dash or is their any other options. I have thought about the built in windshield type but just had new glas a few years back so that is not really an option right now.

I have been told that running a long length of wire from the antennae output on the stereo under the carpet all the way back to the rear shelf will work. Haven't tried it as I am running with a radio delete in the turbo and fender antenna on the sc...

I was thinking about the 928 roof mounted type. Maybe some folks can say whether that works well. Just an idea..

I have been told in the past that their is an issue with mounting on the fiberglass anyway. Something about a ground plane and needing the metal. Roof might be an option, anyone go that way

you can use wire instead of an antenna. on one of my old cars i shaved everything including the antenna. all i did was run a piece of speaker wire back and forth under the dash pad a few times and it worked just as good.

I use an iPhone or an iPod in place of a radio. The nano has an fm radio and works great, no antenna, just a amp under a seat.

I had to remove my antenna and was sick of not having a radio so I bought a mast antenna from AutoZone and ran it under the carpet in the trunk along side the passenger fender. It is 100% hidden and my reception is almost as good as the external antenna.

Just run a wire on the inside of the fiberglass fender, right out of the connector there.

...the f-glass will be RF-transparent for the antenna wire.

Jim, I'd like to hear more about you iPod / iPhone set up. I ditched my radio and want to do the iPod thing but have no clue how to.

using an ipod in place of a hu is easy to do. basically you need an amplifier to power your speakers (easy to mount under a seat) and then you plug the ipod into that via a patch cable. there are two downsides to this method. first you need a separate power cord for charging and second you have to find a 12v switched power supply to turn the amp on (or a constant supply with a toggle switch).

i searched around for something better and found one of these and have been very happy with the results (you still need a to make your own switched power line for the amp):

LiquidAUX™ Deluxe for iPhone and iPod - K33430US - Kensington

it works with any ipod/phone/touch (adjustable width and depth), charges them all, uses a line out instead of the headphone jack AND it comes with it's own remote. plus it is a clean, simple design. here are some pics of the installation in my center console:

tapped into the old ac controls for a power supply

cut a hole in the bottom of the console to mount it

used some velcro-like material to hold it in place

clean and simple install, easy to get to, all iphone functions can easily bee seen.

Mines even easier, a 6' cord 3.5mm headphone plug on one end, and RCA plugs on the other. take the stereo power wire and run it to an amp (this controls the on and off) run a high amperage wire from the battery to the amp. plug your iPhone in the headphone jack and there you go! Also, it works as a hands free phone. You can charge it via a standard mobile charger. Hide it where you want. I have a Blaupuntk Monerey in for looks.
