Lightbulb New York City help requested! Engine Drop and Transmission Rebuild.

All - I am seriously contemplating embarking on a Transmission Rebuild in the next few months (to get my '84 911 Targa back on the road.)

Current thread about the issue:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/527716-transmission-problem-kicks-out-1st.html

I am looking for help from any experienced OR just enthusiastic weekend mechanics.

I am not in a position to pay for the help (unless I get really stuck). Ideally looking for people who want to help out to learn and get experience and have fun tearing someone else's car apart!

I would also consider bartering. I would be willing to help with your projects when mine is done OR offer access to my other skills, e.g. 25 years of Technology experience.

So please reply back or send me a PM if you would be interested and are in the NYC area.

I am also looking for suggestions regarding experienced Transmission Mechanics in the area - in case I get stuck and have to bring in help to save the project.

Thanks in advance for suggestions and offers to help!

Jonathan

Where, precisely, in the Five Boroughs are you? And when do you want to execute the drop?

There are many of us who can help. Dropping the engine should take a few hours at most, even if you have not done it before. Meticulous preparation is the key, have you read my engine drop checklist? It is written for an SWB but the majority of the items are the same.

You should call Gary Fairbanks up in Norwalk, CT and discuss your trans problem with him. Chances are he can fix it more reliably and cheaper than you can doing it yourself. 203-866-2466

I am in Crown Heights, Brooklyn (11216 zip code).

I am gathering details now - but will want to drop the engine within the next month. I look forward to reading your Engine Drop Checklist - and will definitely include in my prep.

Will also call Gary to discuss and get his thoughts.

Thanks - Jonathan

If you get stuck, the place for help is ... right here.

If you are doing a tranny, you WILL need some specific tools, even if they are home-made.

I would lend a hand on the engine drop if needed. I agree with J.C. - - Makes sense to bring the transmission to Gary Fairbanks, the nearest expert on these matters.

Jonathan, were you able to reslove your tranny issues?

Also, I'm new here and just got a beautiful 83SC. I'm trying to learn whatever I've Been reading all posts. I just changed shifter, rod bushings, and replace coupler (Ed installed new bushings)If any of you guys need a helping-hand pls let me know. I don't mind helping and learning.

Would anyone be willing to help me fix some oil leaks, replace injectors/sleeves, fuel line? Might need to do partial drop. Think crankcase breather gasket, maybe oil cooler gasket.

I've read several posts but am affarid of messing something up.

Will pay for you time. Prefer doing this since I can learn at the same time.

Many thanks
Romel

I did have have my transmission rebuilt - by Gary Fairbanks in CT. He is one of the best and super nice guy as well.

Dropped the engine, replaced the clutch, adjusted valves, replace some gaskets, etc.

I am by no means and expert - but might be able to offer an extra set of eyes for the oil leak and other stuff.

Are you having any problems? How much oil is leaking? I had leaks in the beginning - but resolved. I think it was the oil return lines.

It took about 2 years before I felt my car was well sorted - but now it has been problem free for about 1 year (knock on wood.)

I am also going to Autox with the Porsche PCA on March 25th if you are interested.

You will really find out what your car is capable of (if you don't already know.)

Schedule

I will also pm you with my phone number - but feel free to tell more on this board.

Update: (Thanks Walt). I took it to George at Dynamic Auto Care. Great guy, exceptionally talented porsche mechanic and very reasonable so I decided to go with a total reseal/rebuild/replace/upgrade all parts that needed attention. This engine was out i deduced to paint a few pieces.

Engine apart:

Painting

Replaced fan housing with Aluminum one since the magnesium one had issues

Car should be ready in a few days

Now get it back together and come up north here in the watertown area for a little vacation. You can help me with my rebuild!
