Holy HaterAid chuggers Batman! What a bunch of soul-crushing uptight sourpuss goobers we've got on here today! If you listened to these guys they'd probably have you believing that somehow a sports car is an investment or something... I have a 74 targa which had a number of issues that needed sorting out. Yes it was (and continues to be) work and yes it's not the world's most inexpensive hobby but you know what? For one I take great pleasure in lovingly restoring MY Targa and comfort in knowing it is well sorted out and done properly. I enjoy it thoroughly.
Sure there might be other P-cars out there that are more exotic, might be newer, might have shimmer paint or be faster but this one is MINE and all the blather about how 2.7s are liable to explode of you hit a pothole, how Targas are inferior because someone might have been told that the body might twist like a pretzel in a strong crosswind or that mid-year cars won't be enough to get you accepted into the super-duper exclusive gym downtown with the secret handshake for members gets lost somewhere between about 4,000 and 5,000 RPM with the Targa roof off screaming down some twisty road on a glorious summer day. Yes it might be "just a 74 Targa" but just try and wipe the grin off. Bet you won't either. The 74 Targa is every bit a Porsche as the GT3. 2.7 and all. If you get a good lead on one and you want it, GET IT! This is a decision best made 75% from irrational passion and 25% from calculated thought - just enough to keep you (hopefully) from either getting ripped off or handed a real basket case that really will be more complaining than enjoying. But please take what all the haters on this thread say with a very large helping of salt. Good luck with your search. Long story short Last edited by Porsche-O-Phile; 09-23-2010 at 02:25 PM.. |

Matt- That car is in P.E.I., right? It's been kicking around for awhile, be sure to have a good look at it, as it's been for sale forever!!

I would think for $8500 you can get a car, with paint, and the original engine. If not $8500 not too much more. There is a black coupe in the classifieds now that looks pretty nice.

what Porsche-O-Phile said -
There are great mid year cars out there - and there's crap too. each model year series (mid, SC, Carrera, 964, 993, 996) so just go into any of them with your eyes open and you'll be fine.

'74 911 Targa
Here's my '74 911 Targa...
![]() I bought my car in 2002 for $6500 and have put over $8k into it over the years, trying to get it "right". The 3 best things i did after getting the car: 1. Hanging out on PelicanParts and learning from the great people here 2. Meeting a great Porsche mechanic in Findlay, OH (Tab Tanner) to help me when I'm in over my head... 3. Switching the CIS over to Webers I think the '74 is a great car and I love the Targa. The '74 is a good "1st Porsche" since it's pretty easy to understand and work on. Nice, light, fun to drive!

I'll just add one more thing not previously mentioned:
When I look at photos of a car for sale, often the background tells you more about the car than anything else.......This place looks like a low rent wrecking yard. The wheels are not only mis-matched, they can't even get two of the same on the front or rear! Almost looks like it's been slapped together from mis-matched parts.....You could buy the same yr/model for the same money from a loving, caring owner where everthing matches and is orginial .............. I'd move along..............Just my .002 Cents.........(Personally, I'd take a Targa over a Coop-pay or cab any day of the week)
