3.6 Vram dyno run - Kermie's new engine

Over the winter, I've been refurbishing much of my car....freshening it up from the many years of autocrossing and track abuse.
Besides some bodywork and paint, I decided to treat myself to a new drivetrain (gearbox and engine).

Out with the old:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1272494788.jpg
A 3.2 Motronic that was slightly modded (sport cams, larger throttle body, SSI's, sport exhaust, Steve Wong chip.
HP? Possibly around 225-230.

Last fall I attempted to locate a good, used, low mileage Varioram engine for my soon to be RSR looking beastie.
After many months, I gave up in frustration.
With all the time, effort and money being put into the rest of the car, I decided the powerplant needed to be equally as "killer."

I gave Rothsport the go-ahead in late December to build me a fresh Varioram engine.
They took a core engine they had on hand, and built me 3.6 RS Varioram.
In went RS cams and the larger RS intake valves, racing valve springs w/ Ti retainers.
993 heat exchangers (for defrost) and 3 outlet rally style M&K exhaust.
Custom DME programming, the works.
Freshly powder coated engine tins.
Everything mic'd, inspected, replaced, rebuilt, renewed, etc, etc.
In the end, the engine looks brand new....and in reality is.

Here are some pics in the dyno room:

Happy camper!:D

skinnerd 04-28-2010 03:06 PM

Guess I should post the dyno run and results too?

Unfortunately my 33MB clip of the dyno pull can't be posted here.
I'll try to host it somewhere else with a link here later.

But the bottomline, end result was fantastic.
See dyno graph below.
310 hp and 271 torque peak readings with a very flat torque curve.

Can't wait to get this engine and my new gearbox installed.
Hauling it down to TRE's shop in the next couple weeks to mate back up with Kermie.....or should I say Godzilla now?
With a purposeful grimace and a terrible sound
He pulls the spitting high tension wires down, Godzilla!

A Big Congrats!! Enjoy in good health.

Buckterrier 04-28-2010 04:03 PM

Very cool Skinnerd. Is that RWHP?

skinnerd 04-28-2010 04:09 PM

No.....should be at the flywheel seeing as it was measured on an engine dyno.

Geez, my bad!!
With 15% loss you'll get about what I have, 274 rwhp. She'll friggin' fly. You'll be amazed.

skinnerd 04-28-2010 04:17 PM

Hope so.....the car weighs about 2300 lbs.

Buckterrier 04-28-2010 04:26 PM

Wow Doug you'll have an awesome car. Mine weighs in at 2640 with 1/3 tank of petrol.
Great color. I have the same torque number also.

skinnerd 04-28-2010 04:37 PM

The fresh Euro 915 with SCRS gearing, 40/80 Guard LSD, ext cooler, spray bar and Wevo bearing retainer inserts.... should get it moving down the road in fine fashion.

Buckterrier 04-28-2010 04:45 PM

I take it Kermie is an all out track car? What exhaust will you be going with?

skinnerd 04-28-2010 05:00 PM

Actually no....
Street legal. Capable of rallies, autocrosses, and track events.
This car used to do PCA club racing, but is retired from that now.
Spending the winter making it more comfortable.....yet faster.
Makes sense?

The exhaust I'm trying is a custom M&K R style with different inlets to mate up with the 993 HE's and a 3rd outlet (all 3 outlets cap-able), so hopefully I can cap the two rear facing outlets for slightly less noise in town.

HarryD 04-28-2010 05:09 PM

So, are you going to give Britian a run for his money?

Bill Verburg 04-28-2010 05:44 PM

Very nice!

Buckterrier 04-28-2010 05:44 PM

I also have an M&K with 993 HE, good power.

slow&rusty 04-29-2010 04:51 AM

Wow..beautiful and awesome that car is going to scoooot!

The Chef 04-29-2010 07:14 AM

Nice job! That's a project I thought about myself. Then came baby Emma... Congrads!

skinnerd 04-29-2010 01:06 PM

Car has come a long way since late Sept when I dropped it off at TRE's shop.
Kundensport has done the body work and paint already.....beautiful job.

Went from this:

to this:

skinnerd 04-29-2010 01:17 PM

Last time I saw in it early January, it was at this stage:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1272575357.jpg

Since then, the car has moved from Kundensport's shop back to TRE Motorsports where there are putting the rest of the car together.

Ultimately, Kermie should look a lot like this car (without the uber expensive 15" Fuchs for the time.....my Fiskes will just have to do)
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1272575465.jpg

Interior will all be new....headliner, lightweight carpeting, nice covering over my existing rollbar, new old style Scheel seats like these:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1272575584.jpg

and 74 RSR inspired steering wheel:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1272575670.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1272575715.jpg

Hopefully in the end this will be very fast, but comfortable vintage looking hot rod.
Capable of holding it's own on the track or auto-x course.

About 4-6 weeks until it hits the road.
Won't be much sleep for me from now until then.....
;)

skinnerd 04-29-2010 05:43 PM

Ok.....so here's a link to a crummy video of the dyno run on YouTube.

Excuse the tinny sound, but my little Nikon CoolPix is just not that audio capable.
But I'll think you'll get the idea.

Checkout the M&K muffler turning colors during the dyno run.
Guess that 3.6 really puts out some heat?

Doug, since you did the RSR conversion do you still have & want to sell your RS front & rear bumpers?

PatrickM 04-29-2010 08:55 PM

Wow Doug, it sounds awesome. I can only magine how great it really sounds in person. Man those are some big numbers for a 3.6 ! That gear-box has some real goodies going on. I can't wait to see it back up here in PDX. And I thought that your car was fast before.....

oregonmon 04-29-2010 09:17 PM

Farily sure I autox'd with you a couple times. KERMIE license plate, right? It's been a while but loved your car before. Hope you make it out again, that's gonna be a beast.

Great photos but I found this one particularly interesting.

It would make a great wall poster for my study.

Any chance getting bigger version? (please)

hi Marc:

Thanks for the inquiry.
I believe the rear RS touring bumpers were already sold.
And the front bumper was modified (widened) and re-used to fit the wider front turbo flares.
Cheers

Peter:

Send me your email address, and I'll send you the jpg 8.0 megapixels that came out of my cheap little camera.

Glad you like it.
One of my favorite as well.

Yes, the same old Kermie....at your service.

Should make the auto-x in June.
Hopefully.
You can then see the "new and improved" Kermie.

Look forward to catching up with all the old Oregon PCA auto-x gang.
:D

Dude......you are so going to be driving this car this summer at one of the track events.
Plus you were one of the main instigators to even allow me to fall down the "slippery slope" so far.
Thanks man....

So get your diapers ready, because you're going to need them with this car.
:p

Yours is definitely a cool and very unique car, Mark.
I really like those Sycip triple outlet exhausts.
Unfortunately, they don't flow enough for a big 3.6 or that would have been one of my 1st choices for a muffler on my car.:(

I'm going to try the M&K, but even it has a bit of a dip in the torque curve.
Some of the shop guys thought some kind of crossover tube might have helped that.....but how to improvise such a thing on this muffler?

jmz 06-21-2010 09:14 AM

so have you driven it yet? Lets hear about this brute!

cary 06-21-2010 09:19 AM

Doug, I checked my corner balance sheets. I'm 2357# as you saw it yesterday.

skinnerd 06-21-2010 09:45 AM

Jay:

I hear it has been moving under it's own power down in Van Nuys.
Have had some trouble with wheels....who would have thought.
Tough getting any kind of wide wheel halves now with a decent schedule.
But I may have an interim set located, meaning I could pick the car up in the next week.

I have heard the shop refer to it as a "torque monster," so we'll see soon enough.

I will be driving it home from LA to Portland, OR via the scenic route.
Likely through the mountains....Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, Lassen Volcanic, etc....then up through southern Oregon, Crater Lake and many other very nice places.
Just might take me a few days to get home.
But rest assured, the engine will be properly and more importantly, fullen broken upon arrival at my doorstep.

I'll definitely post some finished pics and my thoughts on the finished product.

Wow, that's pretty light Cary.

I am hoping I'll be in the same ballpark weight-wise.

Ferrariguyma 06-21-2010 10:25 AM

Will the real Kermit please stand up...

We have a Kermit too.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1277144725.jpg

Then the 315/35x17 steamrollers go on.
