Gas Pedal Linkage Arm Placement
Sometimes it is just the simple things that make life better! For a while now I have noticed some throttle response issues, slightly sticky gas pedal, and slight reduction in MPG, and what seemed to be reduced top end speed with my 1976 911 with a 3.0L CIS. I've been working through a front oil cooler installation, some wheel balance issues and others, so I put the throttle issues on the back burner.
Today I read a number of very good threads dealing with the sticky throttle problem. Afterwards I examined my accelerator lever (it was fine), generally cleaned up and lubed the pedal assembly, got under the car and checked the cables, cleaned and lubed all the assemblies, and put things back together. It was then that I noticed that there are 2 ports on the back of the gas pedal for the linkage arm that connects the pedal to the accelerator lever. I had previously had the linkage arm ball connected into the upper port. Well to make a long story short, I decided to try connecting to the LOWER ball port on the back of the gas pedal. Took the car for a spin and what a difference in all of the previous problem areas (haven't had a gas mileage check yet). It appears the slight difference in the angle of attack by lowering the linkage arm, allows full opening of the throttle, or at very least, much more opening than using the upper port. So call me a dummy for not checking this out first, but thought I would pass on my experience for those who may have their linkage arm ball in the wrong port.
