My 72 still works, but at times it needs a tap or two and off it goes.

Take the Back off and clean the points with a fine piece of emory cloth, spray with electronics cleaner and it should work even better without the tapping!

ok, I have a query also -- the clock in my '73 usually works fine (during the summer) but during winter it usually stalls out
I keep the car on a charger whenever it is not driven for more than a few days & winters are usually 40 to 50 oF around here is it the grease?? |

Interesting, but I just discovered something:
PO stated in his ad that the clock didn't work. I saw one on eBay at a reasonable price and bought it. Had it tested by a Porsche mechanic and he stated the eBay find worked just fine. I finally got around to pulling out the defective one and inserting the "new" one, only to find that it didn't work in the car either! So I deduced that I probably have two good clocks and some kind of wiring fault in the dash. I should have checked that first and, if you have a "bad" clock, it would be worth dragging out the volt/ohm meter before sending it off to anyone!!Tom Last edited by grizzfan; 09-06-2010 at 10:01 AM.. The clock on my '74 is the only component that hasn't failed or needed replacing/repairing since I've owned the car (8 years)!

This has to be simple. My 1980 SC clock works PERFECTLY. Keep time perfectly - checked against my cell phone and never had to adjust in 5 years of ownership. Makes a clock sound, but I kind of like that. But a few months ago the light burned out. Is this a simple fix? Do I take the back off and replace the bulb? Who sells the bulb?
All other gauge lighting is fine. I miss my clock at night. |

A very simple fix. All gauges can easily be pryed out with your fingers, just try to rock them a little back and forth while pulling, and they come out.
At the back you just have to pull the bulb sucket straight out, ant then push and turn the bulb itself to release it. Standard bayonet type bulb. You can buy them anywhere. Maybe upgrade to 2W or 4W while you're at it. Many folks upgrades to LEDs also. Just as easy.

If I fixed the clock I'd have to be on time, now why would I do that?

The cool thing about my clock not working for 5+ years is how I set it...
Anybody else done that?..... Email sent to man with time on his hands who likes to fix things.... ![]()

Hello 911T and everyone else,
A question came up about our VDO clocks. Is it better to disconnect the battery during long periods of storage so that the clock does not operate and thus prolonging the life of the clock? Or, will it do more harm than good? tx, Joe |

I don't believe a normally functioning clock drains the battery enough to make a difference WRT to disconnecting. As a datapoint I just converted my 68 clock to quartz innards at NHS and it cost me $200.00
