CIS to Carbs with Air Con - Porsche Faux Pas??
I am about to get started on my 3.2SS which includes removing the CIS in favor of PMO's.
I have decided to backdate the heat to clean up the engine bay but I am kinda still hanging on to the idea of having air con. I would enjoy a significant weight benefit by removing it but the car is a hobby car (ie. not to be raced) and so some cool air is appealing. This is something I need to decide on because if I keep it I am going to spend some money replacing all the hoses plus probably more to at least get it working to some extent ![]() I searched the forums but it's hard to find a 3.2SS with air con so I am guessing I might need to get rid of it or else face the mockery everytime someones sees my engine bay. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

I don't see anything wrong with having A/C on a 3.2 SS but your giving up some major weight savings by retaining it. You might want to consider the intended use of your car a little further. By nature the 3.2 SS is a hot rod especially with cams and PMOs. That in and of itself would have me pulling all the A/C stuff out. I'm guessing its worth 200+ pounds all together when you get rid of the blower and all the wiring in the smugglers box.
I live in the middle of Texas and it gets hot here and very humid. I don't use my car for daily transportation, only afternoon and weekend fun. If it was all I had and I had to drive it every day I would definitely look into A/C but I would probably re-think the engine build combination also. Tough decision. Lindy |

Build a light weight AC system.
There are newer lighter compressor's, there are lighter hoses, and the 3.2 Carrera bracket is aloy and lighter. I took out an AC system from a 72 with two condensers and with every thing it approached 100 lbs. I believe a full system out of a Carrera is closer to 50 lbs. To me it seems it might be a positive to get the condenser out of the motor compartment where is preheats air and puts weight over the rear wheels. This C2 did this plus ran light weight aloy tubes to the front. |

I have A/C with a 3.2SS, but I still have CIS.
Not an issue, clearances are the same as they were with th 3.0. I AM using the later 'rotary' compresser, though. |

Another option is the fitting of opening rear quarter windows....really helps air flow if you're considering ditching the A/C

Thanks for the suggestions. I'd thought about getting a newer, smaller and lighter compressor. I was told that it won't help make my air con better but like everything I also hear it will.
My original upgrade was for new barrier hoses, Sanden compressor and fan attached to top of rear condensor to push air through (I have turbo tail). I then wasn't sure if I should just scrap the wole idea and use the $$ for something else. Summers here can get pretty hot though. Will - I hadn't thought of that but it's a good idea to fit opening rears. As we all know the air flow in these cars is terrible and that would really help. Thanks for the feedback. I take on board the hot rod comments Lindy, hence the dilemma! Cheers.

Thanks tcar. Another good idea. I'll do some searching and see exactly what's involved in these mods.
