My 911 3.0l has a front oil cooler. My question is what temp should it run if I drive it 25 miles when outside temp is 50 deg.?
Last night it ran at about 135 deg. and I could still put my hand on the engine from above. |

I don't have a definate answer for you. But my 3.0 runs very cool this time of year in similar temperature range. The oil temp gauge never goes above 180, unless I'm on the track driving hard, or running from the law (kidding) I don't think it is really a problem.

For weeks (perhaps months) at a time in the winter, my front cooler thermostat does not open. My trombone never gets warmed up. I mean, the car's trombone (oil cooler). Whew!
After 25 miles, you engine should just be getting up to temperature. It takes these beasts longer to get hot than other engines, I have noticed.

The way I understand it, you want a fine balance, but it only seems to work for me on longer road trips. You want an oil temp warm enough for any moisture (H20) in the oil to evaporate and go away, but not so hot the oil loses it's lubrication & cooling properties. Apologies to Jack, but all to often, my problem with a box stock '72 S is to get the oil temp up enough to circulate through the front radiator cooler. I understand that's around 180 degrees? Going to Cambria last May, while others without the front radiator were getting nervous about oil temps? Through 95-100 degree California central valley heat? I never got past 220...
A track day, years ago, I saw 235 or so...briefly. Yep..this is blatent bragging!
