Engine Hoist Or Engine Stand, Please Post your pics
I am about to run down to the local Harbor Freight store in town and buy some tools. Can I just use the 1 Ton engine hoist and strap/bolt the motor to the crane that way i can easily get to the clutch, valve covers etc? Or do I have to have the engine stand?
If anyone has pics of their engine on a stand or a hoist please post as I'm a visual learner thanks!!

I would do the stand. Its SOOOO much easier as you can spin the engine around and even upside down if needed. BUT, you will need the adapter ring or mount ring to mount it to a standard 4 arm engine stand mount. You can just use the 4 arms, but you risk damaging the case in a few places. You also want a stand in case you ever want to do trans work.
So, now you want a stand... which one... Get the one with 2 legs like a 'U' so you can put your floor jack in the middle. Then stop at your FLAPS and get a big drip pan, cut some scrap (~3.5'x3") to fit across your stand bottom to support the front of the pan... All set to catch the remainder of the oil from rotating the engine ![]() Below you can see my HF stand w/ 4 arms and adapter ring. You can also see the cardboard box top and drip pan under. ![]() Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!

I went to Harbor Freight yesterday and bought the 1 ton engine stand. But i'm not sure how to safely take the engine from the jack and lift it to the engine stand to bolt on....???
Do I need the engine hoist too so i can lift it up to the stand? Hopefully not, that's another $179... Thanks |

I used a Harbor Freight chain hoist and leveling bar. I placed a 4X4 across 5 joists in the attic and then hung a piece of angle iron from that.

I use an arm on my 2 post lift
But you can also put the engine on a floor jack as high as it will go, connect the yoke and stand on the side then push/pull both upright. Works best with some help. Lots of other ways too if you can think out of the box. 3 guys can lift one into place. |

Engine Stand
Northern Tool seems to be putting a different engine stand on sale every day. I've got a 1500 lb folding one on order, cost $89.00. Went ahead and bought a leveler also for $29 and plan to use a borrowed "come-along" to lift mine up a foot or two using a chain to a very large beam conveniently located in my garage. Next have to figure out how to attach the holding fixture as I see in another thread that the exhaust is likely in the way. Lots of fun coming up. My car is also snow-bound for the next several month, its in for a top end job with misc. "while its apart" work. Trying to watch the budget but most important to not get hurt.

A little variation of the theme: A Habor Freight leveling bar and freight chain mounted to the center beam of my garage with two T-joist plates and a long bolt.
I used this setup to lift up the back of the car so the engine can go in sitting on a dolly....makes for easy one-man engine swaps. ![]()
