Engine pad question
I never had an engine pad since owning my SC so I don't know what difference it makes. It is so many years since I drove a different 911 that I can't decide if I want to install one when the motor is out. I don't even use the radio when driving just the sound, power and handling is all I want to enjoy.
What pros is there to having it? If it is better to install it I should when I have the empty engine bay. Terry

There is a lighter version available, much easier to use and with the engine out of the car more pleasant to install. I like to cut the bottom inch off the mat so I dont have to force it down behind the wire systems in the engine bay.

I installed the lighter weight one last month when I had my engine out. I shot some video, but haven't edited it yet.
I would think this job to be near impossible on an SC with the engine in place. |

Use the heaver version it dampens the noise better. Do a partial engine drop (very simple) set the pad in place and tuck in the bottom portion then lightly spray some adhesive on the pad and the metal surface let dry and smooth in place bend the tabs to hold and you're done.

Well I'm dropping the engine soon, Wayne just got his first mortgage payment from me on the order I placed yesterday. And as an after thought I was thinking of the engine pad. I didn't think it was so noisy with out it but I never put more that 1-1.5k on it per year. With a better tranny and heat exchangers this will change. I never even had heat in the car since 2005 when I bought it.
So I see the heavy pad and lighter pad each have a vote do either fit better than the other and is the difference primarily function of material or actual weight? I don't think I like the visual of the foil look, I'm old school survivor look. Terry

I've replaced a dozen of these mostly the heavier. They both need a little trimming around the hood shock but that's about it. Go with the heavy one you'll be happy you did.

What is the part number for the heavier pad, I did a search and ended up with everything but what I was looking for. I took mine out because the foam was breaking down and glue wouldnt hold it up, just peeled the top layer of foam away. The interior noise is quite a bit louder, I shift by sound and noticed I was shifting 1500 RPMs sooner!
Thanks eric

You cant buy better glue to hold the heavier pad. I hate to buy the glue because the can burns out $25 and its the best I can find for the job.

Can someone explain what "a partial engine drop" involves? I have the same problem, disintegrated soundpad. I just vacuumed, blew out with airline, my old soundpad. It simply fragmented into twenty pieces and a lot of gray dust. Is a partial engine drop simpler, less stuff to disconnect? I have searched the forum for an explanation. There are many who recommend the partial engine drop but there is no description of what is actually done.

I did a partial engine drop on my 911SC to install a new sound pad. Basically, you un-do the two engine mount bolts (support the engine from underneath with a jack) and slowly lower the engine down a few inches. I think I lowered mine about three or four inched to clean off the old sound pad mess (throw a blanket over the engine) and put on the light weight one. Squirt some kroil, liquid wrench, etc, on the mount bolts and let it sit if it has been a while since they've been out.
Don't leave the jack unattended for more than a few hours, some have been known to slowly lower themselves...

I just did two this week using the lighter pads. one was with engine out the other was with a partial engine drop. It was much easier with the engine out, especially doing the adhesive clean up.. I am still cleaning out the mess from the one I did with the partial drop. Doing the install with the partial drop was just a bit more difficult than with engine out. These were the first I have done, and turned out not to be as hard as I thought it might. Can't speak to the sound or heat difference with or without.

Partial engine drop: Disconnect trans coupler behind front seats. Disconnect battery. support engine with jack and appropriate fixture. Loosen both rear engine mounting bolts remove nuts and washers. Slowly lower engine to desired level.

Why didn't anyone tell me that when doing anything to these cars the cost keeps rising with every good idea.
![]() I guess with engine out it will be a better/easier job, the heavier pad it is. I'm trying to get all angle covered when I remove this so it is one shot and can get much more seat time than it the past. Quieter and heat might get the wife to spend more time with me. Thanks as always - Terry

Bluewing,
If you do not have a sound pad in there now then don't expect any huge reduction in engine noise. It certainly will help - it's the first step - but you'll have to add some more sound insulation to the rear interior to start making a real difference (the kind your wife will appreciate). Good luck and have fun...

Yep. I ripped mine out years ago, was deteriorating after 20 years (sure looked original, lol), and I did not notice anything to speak of except a cleaner engine compartment.

Terry, be sure to change the oil pressure switch and o-ring (viton) on the oil thermostat.
