child safety seats

I have tried several configurations and have come up with this as the best.
I removed rear seats and seat-belts. Replaced belts with hardened eye-bolts. Then ran a caribeaner through eye-bolt.

Using the L.A.T.C.H. system I locked the outside directly to the eye-bolt and ran the inside through the caribeaner over to the other eye-bolt. Took the top mounted strap and attached it to the eye-bolt as well. It took a lot of pulling and sitting and jamming my knee into and out of but it finally paid off.

The seats used are COSCO Touriva
I purchased them at K-Mart for $49 each.
They are good for 5lb-40lb (2.3kg-18kg)
19"-40"(48cm-102cm)

My children ar 12mo. and 3yrs.

I hope this helps any Dads or Moms

This was a factor for purchase in our house.

kick ass. i tried a few different ways to accomplish the same goal with one. unfortunately, i could never find the room needed for the rear-facing seat. as my girl is only 5 months, that is mandatory. it was pretty easy (as you say, with lots of tugging and kneeling and pushing...) to mount it solidly facing forward.

i was looking forward to the day when we could start taking 'daddy's car' as a threesome, but now that is on hold, pending daddy getting another porsche.

Thanks for responding. I'm very sorry to hear about your car. I hope everything works out for you.
I never tried rear facing. This is my first Porsche. We had one in front one in rear with an unhappy motion sick wife in the rear.

If you are in the market I would buy Russianblue's 72 targa and put a 1500 dollar 2.4 in it quick. (gulf blue)http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?threadid=228458

Great idea. I am going to do the same thing for my 4 year old. So did you run the belts that run on the underside of the seat through the eye bolts on each side? Im not sure if i understand exactly how you hooked the baby seat belts to the eye bolts.

Thanks
JJeff

I have been putting a car seat in the front passenger seat and locking the belt with a racing belt clip and then looping the upper LATCH around the head rest. Worked good enough for the wife to approve the set-up (she's an engineer), took alot of free body diagrams.

Did you make provisions for the upper latch. Most cars now have an attachment point on near the rear window? I haven't been able to figure that one out yet.

4 eye-bolts where lower seatbelts would be mounted w/caribeaners throught the eye-bolts on the trans tunnel only. Take latch attach outside (left or right ) directly to eye-bolt. Take inside (trans tunnel)through caribeaner (to draw it into seat-well, otherwise slide tightening mechanism will not tighten enough) and attach to eye-bolt or caribeaner on opposite side of trans tunnel. Then bring top mount LATCH down to eye-bolt or caribeaner.

You can also use the slide that creates the 3-point on your driver or passenger belts bolt them to the sides of your trans tunnel. This allows you to draw the seat in to the seat-well. The bolt points are too far forward for latch to work. NOTE: you must use the opposite route for your LATCH to function ie: use the rear facing tunnel for forward facing.

I hope this helps.
It took me 2 hours of trial and error till I got it right.

But rewarded myself and family w/ a 2 hour round trip to our favorite sushi bar.

I did not use the upper shelf mount point. I didn't feel comfortable with the screws holding it in.

If either one of you would like more detailed pics I will take some tomorrow and send them
Dave

I'm doing this right now. More detailed pics would be great. The clips that have "Cosco" on them - where do they go? How about a drawing? Any help is appreciated.

my wife would not let me use the front seat. all child seat documentation suggests strongly that you use the back seat, so she believes that what is true for a geo metro is true for a 911.

I've been using a child seat in the front seat. I thought all the child seat documentation suggests the back seat because of air bags.

If you must use the front seat move the seat back as far as possible and disable airbag if so equipped. In my area it is illegal to have a child in the front seat that has an airbag that cannot be disabled.

that's what i thought, too. but evidently (i asked out pediatrician) in most cars, the back seat is far safer in an accident. i can't help but think, though, that the front passenger seat in a 911 is substantially safer than that of a mazda 323, a chevy camaro, or the aforementioned geo metro, to name a few.

Do you have an engine and trans left from your car? I just talked to Alex and he is thinking about selling a 72 T w/o engin and trans for about 6K. Think about it

i can't wait to find out. i seriously do not know what they left behind. no one i have talked to can give me much info. i am just assuming that if they tell me one quarter of it is there, then the engine is probably gone.

but, as i said in another thread, i have no shame. if i can get a good enough deal on another car short of an engine/tranny, i will happily install same from a vw as a temporary measure. on this forum, engines are always turning up, so all it takes is patience.

thanks much for mentioning that '72, but even a sweet price like that is a bit out of bounds for a little while. rest assured though, i am hooked. i owned that car for one year and five days and that was one year and four days longer than it took to confirm what i had suspected my whole life. i will get another.
