Marelli dizzy replacement
Okay wiseguys! What can I substitute a Marelli distributor with on a 71 2.2T?

Based on the Tech Spec pocketbook, it's a Bosche # JDFR6 0231 159 008

Search for Marelli, then start crying quietly to yourself as you realise all the posts don't tell you a definitive answer.
John Forcier (Fishcop) recently had a 72/3T or 2.7 CIS dizzy (I think - #0-231-184-001) machined down slightly so it fits his '69 Marelli "hole". He is probably the best guy to ask. I think the advance curve is ok (I have been told it is). I don't know if the 71T has the right or wrong size hole already. I am fixing mine by replacing the whole engine ![]() (edit) Or you can just buy the Bosch which fits. B.O.H.I.C.A. for a new one (and rarely available second hand). Cam

Steve, as CamB mentioned I recently replaced my Marelli for a Bosch.
On the excellent advice of the esteemed John Walker (John Walker Workshop) I obtained a relatively cheap 1974 bosch dizzy. It needed a freshen up, so I rebuilt it courtesy of one of Warren's (Early S Man) instructional posts. The advance in a 2.7 S dizzy (other than the Carrera) is the same as the earlier T engine. I also purchased a new rotor cap and rotor button (rev limited to 6500). Whilst the body of the distributor was dismantled and free of obstructions, I took it to a local performance engine rebuilder and had the shaft machined to exactly match the shaft of the Marelli. There is a width difference of about 2 mm and the O ring is in a slightly different spot but this does not matter (but you must get a new O ring to match or use the old Marelli one). I then rebuilt the distributor and added a Crane XR 700 optical ignition unit and new leads. The overall improvement was incredible. Your hardest task is to track down a suitable dizzy, but trust me....you will not find an original second hand Bosch to fit! Good Luck

I was quoted NZ$200 for a suitable dizzy - about US$80 - so it really is pretty cheap.

Guys ... check the shank diameter on the 2.2 Marelli ... I belive the 2.0 engines used the smaller diameter. The 2.4 and 2.7 distributors use a nominal 30.00 mm bore in the crankcase, and I believe the 2.2 engines did also.

Good point Warren - otherwise when you take your "new" distributor down to the machine shop they are going to look at you strangely.

Yep, maybe you'll be lucky and not have to machine the shaft. By the way...the vaccum unit that the Bosch will come with does not matter to your engine (it only retards at idle) so do not connect it.
I'm sure that if you engine is running like mine was after at least 15 to 20 years on the same rotor and button, you will really notice the difference a correctly performing ignition system makes!

I used a "S" dist in my "T" and am very happy with it. The Bosch number is 0231-159-006. Cost was $100 US. I set the timing for total advance. At idle/low rpm the timing is advanced with the "S" dist but I haven't noticed any problems. I think it is about 5 BTDC when the Marelli unit was 2-3 ATDC at idle.

I recently replaced the Marelli Distributor in my 69 T engine only to find out that the old one was not the problem. The cap is a little worn but bar that it's fine and works fine. So if anyone needs one or even for parts feel free to mail me.... at the moment it's sat on shelf not helping anyone !!
