Not much on the ST in the Carrera RS book. Starkey's book "R-RS-RSR" has just a bit. For more ST info try Frere's "Porsche 911 Story", Ludvigsen's "Excellence was Expected" and "The Porsche Book" by Boschen/Barth O/P. Also the two Excellence magazine issues #80 10/98 and #87 10/99 have features on two STs. Between all of these you can obtain a very good understanding of what made an ST, but there is no one book that is as definitive for this model as the Carrera RS book is for the RS.

Thanks!

Thanks Jack, and everyone else! I broke down and bought a book. Can't wait to see it next week.

Thanks Randy; I've already got those sources. I just figured I'd ask.

I didn't realize this thread was 10 years and was thinking $150 was pretty cheap for this book. Glad I got my copy (gratis) years ago.

Wow....reading some of the comments from 10 years ago are hilarious!
"$150 for a book????"

I put my copy on ebay last year and I think it was the first one to be put up for sale in quite a while. I knew it was collectible, so I put a reserve of 800 on it. It passed 800 the first night and seven days later sold for $2400. Immediately other RS books popped up for auction and got close to what I got.
There's been rumors for a couple years that a new revised edition will be printed.....
Instant collectors item????

This is kinda funny, but it turned out to be fairly accurate.

I think there was someone on early 911s registry that started a thread trying to catalog and inventory the books. Maybe I should see what mine will go for...

Back in The Old Daze, we were the U.S. importer for these books, and they were a tough sell at the price back then. Wish I'd saved a few: one just sold for $2,000...

I bought mine in maybe 1990 or 91 at a place in San Francisco called something like Automodelli. Pretty sure I paid $89 for mine brand new and they had maybe 6 of them.
Yeah.....shoulda bought all 6.

I guess it's all relative to the price of the cars though. A nice 73 Carrera RS was sold for under a hundred grand back then. Now they're going for three times that......

Why is this book in such hot demand? What's so wonderful about it that would cause people to pay stupid money for it?

Because people are nuts. Just like the values of the cars. You could build a better car than a real RS for a fraction of the price, but some people think that the real deal is more valuable, (even though its not better). Then its their responsibility to find some other sucker who believes the same nonsense and get them to pay more. Why is gold so valuable today? Is it because there is such high need for it and a low supply. NO! Then what value does it really have? If the world comes to end the most valuable resource will not be gold, which is pretty much useless (except in electronics). The most valuable resource will probably be water (and ammunition).

That's what I asked myself when I sold mine. It's just a book.....a very nice book, but just a book. Like many many things in this world, some people will pay stupid money to own something, while others could care less. Supply and demand also comes into play. Only so many were produced. More people want one than there are available....do the math!

Let me modify that a tad:

some people will pay stupid money to own some physical object, while others will save the information carried by the object

I photocopied the interesting pages from a copy of that book.

oh yeh - I did that too

but it's ok if people want to preserve museum pieces - there is even a social value to doing so (preserving the past, etc.)
