Remove the trim ring, then the lens. The bulb has a spring clip holding it in place. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be careful not to scratch the paint as the lens can be awkward to hold.

Thanks for the responses. It is standard (US spec?), definitely not euro.

I don't know if you are anything like me, but I need step by step directions for even the simplest tasks. If you don't have Wayne's book yet (101 Projects for your 911) I would suggest it. There is a write up for changing to H4 headlights. Just use those directions for getting your sugar scoops off.

so there are some pitfalls for a first timer.....

the screws can be rusted or heads easily rounded off...
1. first remove the screw that you see on the outside, bottom of headlight ring..

2. then tilt the bottom of the ring away from the car an inch or so and start a little wiggle and very slight upwards pressure. the top of the ring is held in place by a "lip" it will come loose and you lift the ring away from the car at about a 45 degree angle...

3. set aside

now the headlight is most likely a "sealed beam" which means it an "all in one" light ...you replace the entire thing. It is held on by 3 small screws around the edges and a trim ring. There are additional screws (adjusters) dont mess with those....get a real good look at the ring and see which "tabs" are screwed in place. Use a very good, well fitting screwdriver, and apply anough force to not allow the screw driver to turn inside the screw head (if the head strips off this becomes a more challenging job)

dont set the screws in the driveway, they are easily lost, put them in a safe spot..

4. remove the ring and the headlight fall forward only held in place by the plug...pull the plug off but simply pulling...

5. install the new headlight to the plug

6. IMPORTANT STEP: - have someone turn on the headlights and check that the new one works!!

7. now put the new light in the mount and rotate it, there are little glass tabs that will fall into little pockets (that's how it is aligned)

8. install the retaining ring , and the 3 screws but DO NOT TIGHTEN THE SCREWS...leave them loose until all 3 are in...then wiggle the light a little to make sure it is still seated in the tabs a

9. tighten the 3 screws (not tight, just very snug)

10. place the scoop and ring over the light and "hook" the top lip...

this can rotate and will take a little effort to get it on straight...be patient when its right it will be easy, dont force anything...with a little effort the bottom hole will line right up and you can then

11. install the screw (big one) and dont over tighten...

check operation again and you are done...

some tips - clean the dirt out of there when its all apart, clean the inside of the ring, clean the outer lip and remove any sand, cigarette buts or small critters that have made this a final resting place or a home to enjoy a warn ride in your car

cheers i hope this is helpful, going from memory....might have missed a little bit but got the highlights

What year?

They were split between 84-86 and 87-88. The later H5 is easy.
- Remove screw at bottom.
- Pull light free and unplug.
- Replace bulb.
- Plug in.
- Hang assembly at top and put in screw at bottom.
