getting closer

We have the adjustable rear sway bar attached. We will need to wait for some road time to get the front and rears adjusted properly. The car should be pretty flat so I hope the 195's will have enough stick to avoid aggressive "unintentional" oversteer.

We have cleaned out the tank and treated the interior, now we just need to repair a few weak areas on the seam, weld it back up and deal with the external aesthetics.

O/S are still seat belts, the dash knee pad, and engine tuning.

We might just squeak in a road test before the winter arrives.... fingers crossed.

About Financial Decisions

What do you think guys? Should I install the 100 Litre fuel tank or do the financially smart thing and sell it for big bucks to some other foolish addict?

Yeah, that's right, you know I'm gonna stick the prick right in the front of this old girl. You never know when I might want to stick a catheter and pee bag up my dink and see how far South I can get on 100L of high test. Besides, I have been repeating these financially unsound decisions for quite a long time and man do I make myself happy.

When this project is done, I doubt I'll sell it for a very long time and even when I do... to pay for the old age home... I won't remember what it cost and I won't care.

I agree with Tom, the journey is the thing.

You'll need the 100 liter tank in it to go anywhere the way these drink gas!
From experience, rebuilding or modifying any old car is never financially prudent, but I don't care and it's alot of fun. And as the wife says, she knows where I'm at and I'm not out in the bars!

It's a sealant specifically for gas tanks. the stuff dries almost instantly, so after we weld up the tank we plan to pour in a little and rotate the tank to get it in all the seams. I will take a picture of the can when I'm in the shop this weekend.

Oh yeah, I forgot to post that. Once we get the tank welded up we will pour the rest in the tank and let it get in the seam. Here's a pic of the can.

More Updates

We have made some more headway and I need to catch up on my posting.

We put new foam backing and leather on the kneepad and installed it in the car a few weeks ago. I think it came out great. The heater vents were installed in the sills and the inside dome lights were wired up and installed.

These are iPhone pics and the lighting is not great but everything looks great in the flesh.

Updates cont'd

We used the RS door cards and when all is said and done they actually look fine. They are in keeping with the minimalist theme and the car is pretty much all Orange and Black with the exception of the door pulls.

Jessy spent many, many hours wet sanding and polishing and the results are awesome.

More on the gas tank

We got the gas tank all welded and sealed up. We did the bottom of the tank in textured undercoat spray first with the top clean metal and sprayed the whole thin in satin black… it looks correct, I think. The sending unit cleaned up well enough and damn it's long to get all the way to the bottom of the 100L tank. I was worried the piano wires would be overly fragile. After cleaning up the sending unit we powered it up and we did a little dance when the gas gauge registered the movement of the float accurately from full all the way to empty… I might have lost that bet.

And the coolest thing is that when we cleaned up the sending unit from the tank rescued from the '72 beater the date on the tank and unit was "12 67" so even though it's not original to my '68 I think it's period correct ( a little bonus).

Here's the pic's

Thar She Blows !!

We started the car today and Larry did a few hours or initial fine tuning. The MFI is a little cold blooded but once she warmed a little it just purrs…. and roars. I am just a little beside myself at what this little 2.4L beast sounds like. It's at least the second time in the project that I started to turn in tight little circles and pee down my leg just a little. With the MFI and the M&K pipe the car goes from mild to wild in sound. MyiPhone video doesn't do justice and we were only blipping to somewhere around 3500 but Oh My what a joyous occasion. Here's my first attempt at downloading a video.

Crap, the video is a .Mov file type and I can't get it to attach….. is there an easy method?

Hi Yuri,

We went to 2500 and used a compound remover as well.

Cheers

Video attempt #2

Here is a short video of the return from the Maiden Voyage #1 and a Drive By #2 from the Maiden Voyage. You have to wait through 20 seconds of nothing on the 2nd video, sorry. This car has exceeded my expectations by a land slide in every way… I can't wait for spring… then again I'm likely gonna land in the Hoozegow! This little beggar is a blast! So,so,so good !!!

Thoughts from Maiden Voyage

The Good:

Wow, this little car is all goodness. I expected to enjoy the car but the quality of the ride has really exceeded all my expectations. The 15 inch tires with their taller profile really lend themselves to a pleasant feel, the suspension is very, very stiff and the car stays very flat but the soft tires make it very, very comfortable. Because of the cars spartan nature it has a lot of sensory feedback… it's quite loud when the rpm's build but not too bad at cruising rpm. The gears, which were a mystery until this weekend, are really quite tall and the car will cruise at 120kph or 70mph at a relatively low, i'm guessing 2500 rpm. ( tach not yet working) very pleasant for the highway.

The Rennshift, Wevo coupler set up is great on the 901 transmission. The shifts are short and really quite firm and metallic, you might even call the shift notchy… something I hoped for but didn't expect.

The engine is tight and the MFI delivers fuel in a way that makes the engine build revs quickly, despite the longer stroke, the engine spools quickly… feels revvy if that's a word. I had a light weight flywheel in my 3.6 conversion and this engine feels similar. It feels quite a bit more energetic than my 85 3.2. Throttle response is right there.

Again, I'm surprised that the ride quality is every bit as refined as my 85 and everything just feels so much lighter. I believe this car will very quickly become my favourite.

The Bad or Yet to be Sorted:

I mentioned that the tach's not yet working, although we have not even investigated the issue and I'm sure it's a minor issue.

2nd gear syncros are FUBAR. You can't hit 2nd without double clutching. Without a sneak approach it grinds like a bugger… so the engine and tranny are coming back out this winter and the 901 is coming apart. All the other gear changes are all sweetness.

When the engine warms up and with the air hose connected from the air exchangers to the MFI Pump, the car will lean itself out a little too much. With this hose off it runs perfect but it doesn't like to start from cold. That said, once started, it idles beautifully. That's just a little fine tuning of the MFI system. I am very encouraged by how well the car runs on our first tuning attempts. We have ordered a diagnostic gauge so we can monitor our air/fuel ratios and avoid the chance of running too lean as we figure it all out.

Overall, I never dreamed that the car would feel this well sorted on my initial shake down…i am very, very, excited !!!
