XDI Ignition Coils

Does anyone out there know how the XDI ignition coils work (or for that matter, if those coils are a common GM (or other MFG) part). As I move from the XDI to the MS3 I need to determine if these can be triggered by a logic signal or if they need some other circuitry. When I look at various pieces of information, it seems to me that the 4 wires to the coil pack are
red/white 12V
Each other controls the firing of the specific coil. But I'm a bit concerned about how to control the charging time of the coil (don't want to fry something expensive).

What are other MS3 users using on their 911's?

GM style DIS coils are very common - price right too. You can source from just about any aftermarket speed shop, or online parts warehouse ( for stock )

You can get replacement coils for the XDI system at almost any FLAPs, a GM two post coil..

Theses are "dumb" coils and need an igniter to fire... I doubt you can drive them directly from Megasquirt

Thanks.. yes I need an igniter, and have one on order (got the answer on the MS forum). Its good to know that they are nothing special, that way when I go to dual plug (way down the road), I can get the second set of coils cheaper (it won't have their fancy mounting plate, but by then I'll have a milling machine and can make my own.

I was told by the guys I got my car from, which has a single plug Electromotive HPV gold board (soon to be twin plug), that the coil packs are the GM 3800 V6 coil. I have a box for one at home that I can get a part number off of if you want it.

Thanks.. but right now twin plug is far in my future so i'd probably loose the part number before I get around to doing it.
