Hey Tom,
After 6K plus posts on Rennlist, you've prompted me to sign in here - just so I can rag you on with this project! :) Just emailed you re the DME/Drive Block module ( immobilizer) .... it is a royal PITA for every 993 owner - and best avoided in your conversion if at all possible. For general amusement and background info on Tom's noble project, I am the source of the VRAM engine ... I had sold one of my 928's ( a S4) in '06 to pick up two 993 C4S cars: one of which is shown below - the other being a somewhat shop worn Guards red parts car pictured earlier in this thread. Rick & I stripped the latter chassis: tons of fresh parts, which allowed me to 'tune-up' my blue car as req'd .... leaving the engine sitting on a dolly, awaiting my next project - which had not happened ( the injectors were cleaned & cycled on my bench rig, the cylinders given a fogging oil treatment, and the crank routinely turned ). Should be a great engine in Tom's chassis .... now to figure out what to do with the mating G64 6-sp box with 26K miles .... Anyway, thanks for the link - now I can drop in to follow along ... PS .... got the W8 engine & trans squeezed in, finally: nice stealth wagon! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1325467742.jpg |

Here's a gratuitous pic of you being chased a few years ago-Love those wide-bodies! Back on subject, is Canada classed as ROW, I wonder if it would be easier to source a DME up here in the Great White North? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1325508455.jpg |
not to steal the thread but!!!!
Garth S. Any more info or pics on that W8 conversion you are doing? maybe the Rennlist link will do. Thanks!!! |

No big deal. Thanks for the clarification. I though for a moment he was trying to put that w8 engine somewhere else. Thanks.
Anyway great project you got going. welcome to the forum |
Well, looks like the New Year is starting off O.K. after all. I called a Porsche dismantler in Ontario today. They have a '98 DME and the best part is it only cost $400. He's also shipping it directly to Timmins place. I also ordered a new starter ring from our host. The old one had a low spot on it and I really don't want to take any chances.

It sounds like you got things sorted out. The engine I bought (a '96) came with an ECU that apparently had the immobilizer removed. I'm not at the point in the conversion (car going to paint soon) where I'll be able to test it in the next few months, but calling the ECU repair place that did mine would also be something to look into. The shop that I bought the engine from said that they paid to have this ecu modified. I'm guessing this ECU is from a '96 and they soldered in a new chip.
I'm pretty sure, based on the part number, that this is a '96 ecu. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1326037464.jpg |

It's been pretty quiet around here after New Years. With the cold and snow I feel like I'm in hibernation mode. The first round of conversion parts should be here in one to two weeks (gotta love customs). Being bored, I was able to get creative and come up with a solution for my new bumper air vent for the dual coolers. It's hard to say how good or cheesy it will look until the front valance is back on. Any and all criticism is welcome. Going to remove old 19 row cooler and lines today.

Oil line and cooler is now removed. I couldn't believe how much dirt had accumulated on the cooler. I would say my engine was relying on the engine cooler for most it's cooling ability. For those not familiar with Nova Scotia, we have to drive on a dirt road for approx. 5 miles to get to our track (Atlantic Motorsport Park Official Website) -not good.
But then again the car was painted in 1992 and even then I'm not sure if they removed the oil lines and cooler so I guess you can get a bit of accumulation. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1326052408.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1326052434.jpg |
Looks Good
Hey Tom, I think the vents look great !! I'm still afraid you won't be getting enough air in there, especially since old Ruby's getting a little tail. With you just behind me, you'll be in a virtual vacuum.

Vent looks good Tom. Maybe I shouldn't get the oil leaks fixed so I can keep you and Greg in the smoke screen!!!

Well, the conversion parts finally showed up. Time to get down to the good stuff.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1327661730.jpg I wanted to install the trans cooler and pump to the transmission underneath but when I did a mock up there's not a whole lot of room under there. There's the heater tubes, cables and e-brake cables. It just wasn't worth the effort. I'm now going to install the cooler in the tail and the pump should fit nicely next to the engine compartment fuse panel. Once I installed the fuel filter and cleaned up some wiring, there was plenty of room for the pump. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1327662417.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1327662441.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1327662479.jpg Next will be wiring the pump. I'm going to use the rear window defogger switch to power the pump. |
Jeff, I saw your engine on the stand at Larry's the other day. Man, there's alot of plumbing, etc. on those turbo engines. Once Larry is finished with it you won't be using that "smoke screen" trick on us anymore. I suspect you'll have more power to boot!

Here's a pic of the modified 993 cross member
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1327695729.jpg SAI plugs and power steering block off installed http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1327695803.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1327695826.jpg Installing the wiring harness was fun. Watch out for the fuel lines! I used a 21/8 hole saw but had to make the hole a little bigger. I'm thinking 21/4" would be perfect. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1327696076.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1327696098.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1327696120.jpg Ready for the brain (still being programmed) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1327696172.jpg |
Single pulley installed. This is definitely a must since there would be no way of knowing if the fan belt broke until the engine cooks itself,Unless you want to go through the hassle of installing an idiot light in the dash.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1327711669.jpg By the way you want to put some red loctite on those 3 little studs. Those lock nuts really want to hold on to the studs. I drilled a hole in the end of the cone filter to accept the temp sensor. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1327711848.jpg I removed the expansion tank to make room for the driver side cooler. Right now I just did a closed loop but I'm wondering if I should install the expansion tank in the trunk? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1327712005.jpg |
I have a question regarding vacuum lines. Garth, maybe you could chime in here. Tha first pic is an empty line in the left side near the distributor. I would like to hook this up to the vacuum cannister. What was it for originally?
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1327847058.jpg The 2nd pic is a large diameter vacuum line which I would like to hook up to the brake booster. Is this correct? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1327847154.jpg I also can't figure out where to attach my charcoal canister |
Did a little baking last night. Bake for 15 min. at 450 deg. and that starter ring just drops right on. Installing the release bearing was "easy as pie" once I referred to the tech article from our host.

I was at my buddy Larry's place the other day. He installed the fittings in my transmission and crimped the cooler hoses for me. He rebuilt my tranny 3 years ago. I guess I'll really give that rebuild a test this year! Between helping me and working on Scotia Greg's 911 rot rod project he was still able to find time to resurrect a basket case of his own. He was finishing up the block sanding when I was there so I couldn't get any good pics of the overall car but was able to get one of the engine. This guy is a magician folks!
