915 problems
Help! all of the sudden I cannot get my car to drop into second gear. I drove home shifting from first to third. All of the other gears work fine. Now it's in my garage and I looked at the coupler, and have sloppy bushings. I have not checked the ball cup or removed the console yet. Would I be able to Isolate this problem by trying to shift in to 2nd with the coupler disconected?Or replace the coupler, or does this look like the big rebuild?

quite often, the teeth on the 1st or 2nd syncro hub all break off, which allows the syncro ring to expand and block the shift sleeve from moving into it's normal position. if you can't get past the neutral position, that's probably what happened. if you pull the drainplug and there's a few tiny teeth in the magnet, you're in for a teardown. if you keep driving it in this condition, the brake bands, syncro and stop dogs can go thru other gear teeth and break them too. i'm in seattle by the way.

Pull that plug. You don't want to find out later that you were driving dogteeth around in the oil. If no teeth, then start working the coupler, shift bush, gear oil change, shift plate and fork, etc. John rebuilt my trans and is a great resource. I'd recommend you talk to him if you have any problems. John
