BigB, I would play the patience game. The seller needs the sale eventually and will probably come back with a better offer. Especially at the end of the month.

I cannot believe NoSex does not have a 911 yet... WTF are you waiting for?

But patience is part of the game. I am on the prowel for an early 912/911 soft top Targa and figure it will take me a year or so to get one at the right place time and price.

There is a nice 912 I saw yesterday for $2000ish and runs! But it is a coupe and not what I am after.

Good Luck!

Still haven't found "the one". I've also slowed my search, as I'm on the cusp of a potential change in my professional situation. Don't want to do something irresponsible. If I wait a bit my budget should increase too.

It's funny how the general mantra on this board is "patience", except in my case. Of course I understand the background driving the sentiment is of my own making, and the fact that you care has been duly noted ;)

Pillow 04-11-2002 02:13 PM

LOL :)

Yes, NoSex you have a special situation. Granted I do not paruse this board as much as I used to, it always seems that when I check in with the board you are almost buying one... But not quite.

I like my 911 but it is not my "ideal" Porsche, but I am happy with it overall. Kind of like in real estate, there is no house that will fulfill each and every one of your needs and wants. So just get close enough and jump in.

Especially in the used car market nothing is perfect due to use and availability. Just take it as it comes.

Good Luck,

nostatic 04-11-2002 02:20 PM

I've come around to that mode of thinking. At this point it is mostly due to the fact that I'm on the short list for a new job that would necessitate a move. I should hear something soon (maybe today), but I decided that getting a 911 can wait until after the dust settles.

I think it probably is along the lines of Superman's "aged" wisdom...I'm trying to bite off a bit less these days and get everything sorted before I accept a p-car as a mistress. We all know how demanding they can be...

Pillow 04-11-2002 02:32 PM

True, a new job and potentially moving is darn good excuse to push off the purchase of ANY car in my opinion, until the dust settles.

I have a friend selling his '66 VW deluxe bus that he just purchased a few months ago because of moving houses and needs cash. Not what he wants to do, but what he is semi forced to do in life... Sucks, but he just does not have the money to float a house/move. I do not agree with his frivilous buying habits that put him in this situation, but it is not my place to disrepect his life choices either. Moral of the story is to keep a little "oh shniz" cash in the bank for a rainy day :)

Brian993 04-11-2002 02:35 PM

Hey you two, why dont you get a room.:D

Pillow 04-11-2002 02:40 PM

But we are solving the worlds problems! Here on Pelican! :) LOL

Probably does sound like a drunk bar conversation though!

... Speaking of which, it is Miller time! I am off to TacoMac (bar) for a pitcher!

Nostatic -- Moving? Didn't you just buy a new house? Sorry for the offtopic post, but I feel like I know the guy :p

Nope...been living in the same house for the last 3 years or so. At this point we have to move so that our son can go to a decent public school (he starts 1st grade in the fall). If a new job doesn't force the issue, then we'll just up and move to the westside of LA (yuck). Insane housing prices, but the schools are good and the commutes to work are short (5 and 15 minutes as opposed to 60 and 45 minutes).

Sure the weather is great, but there's plenty about LA that blows...like paying $750K for a 1500 sq ft house on a 6000 sq ft lot...

Hey, if you feel like you know me, wanna help me move?!?!? ;)

I really try to avoid the nostatic abuse, but I can't let this one past without taking a poke.

You seem to have learned a lot in your 2 weeks of 911 ownership. Or were you talking about....

Never mind.:D :D :D

I know this might be shocking, but it is possible to learn things about ownership without having a car in your driveway. Not only do I read (stunning, I know), but I've kept in contact with the new owner of my ex-car...he's put about $2500 into it, and now might be looking at worn valve guides. I think that qualifies as a "harsh mistress".

And yes, I might have been talking about...some of that creeps into many aspects of life.

Doug Zielke 04-11-2002 07:25 PM

Nostatic,
I think you've lost most of any credibility you have here....until you actually *buy* a Porsche and keep it for more than a few weeks.

BUT, I see by your website you have a passion for a few Vacuum Tubes mixed in with your semiconductors.
This is a good sign, and an indicator of more character than I've given you credit for in the past. For that misgiving, I apologize.

Ahh, the sweet glow of a set of EL34s...

Unfortunately bass gear that is all tube is insanely heavy. I strike a decent compromise with my tube preamp.

But throughout my guitar days...tubes, tubes and more tubes. Numerous Boogies, old Fenders (including a rare 4-12 black face pro reverb), Riveras, Marshall, Dr. Z, and my all time favorite, Bogner.

I'm glad that "ancient" technology shows some character through the flaws. I'm also a big fan of lugged steel bike frames too if that helps :)

Or how about a home-brewed Class A power amp running a nice quartet of good ol' 6L6's?

"Lugged steel bike frames".....WTF?? Nahhhh!!

Or some serious class B -parallel push/pull. Now you're talkin real hollow state power. Nice to know there are still a few geeks around who keep the faith.

Funny you should mention that...a buddy of mine is in the process of building a guitar amp from scratch. 6L6s can be a bit too glassy for my taste...I play only Strats, and that combination with a maple fretboard can be painful...although running class A could soften that a bit. Actually, EL84s were my favorite for years...until I got my hands on a Shiva with EL34s.

In the end I think it's all execution, but it is amazing how you actually can hear and *feel* a difference. I've played some great 6L6 (and 6V6!) amps over the years. That being said, one of my favorite amps was a Pignose 150 Crossmix...75 watts of silicon power. It had a mid pot with a contour/gain tweak...that thing screamed (until it blew an op amp...never was the same afterwards). I'll get some live recordings from 1980 using that amp up on the site in the next day or two.

If you've got a schematic, my buddy might be interested in checking it out.

Brian993 04-11-2002 08:06 PM

Guys c'mon ha. Start a new thread.

Doug Zielke 04-11-2002 08:08 PM

Hey you Bottleheads.....BigPainter is trying to buy a 993 here.

Oh well.
I will try to dig up a basic schematic of that sweet (not "glassy") little amp. I built it about 25 years ago, but gave it away to my (stupid) brother-in-law. Why? Don't know or remember (it probably had something to do with too much Makers Mark).

BTW, I still have 6 (virgin) Western Electric 6L6's in my little stash of vintage bottles. They don't make 'em like that any more!

pwd72s 04-11-2002 08:09 PM

Nostatic? You really think there is such a thing as a "decent" Government funded school? PT Barnum was right...
