Signal Orange or Signal Yellow?
Hi all,
My 71 S has now moved to the spray shop, and the time has come for the choice of colour. It was originally Signal Orange, which is the leading my choice at the moment. I have searched on the web for other cars of this colour and it does seem quite rare. Can anyone confirm that the 911T on the first page (3/4 way down) of the Hershey photos is signal orange? See: http://www.pelicanparts.com/swapmeet_pics/Hershey_swap_02/Page1.htm Also I'm interested in the colour Signal Yellow, which was a special order colour for that year. Does anyone have any pics of cars in the colour? If know of any links, which colour charts, or cars either in signal orange/yellow I would much appreciate it. Thanks in advance Alan.UK |

That looks like Signal Orange. It's hard to tell from photos though. A neighbor four doors down from me used to have a 74' in that color and that looks like it. My vote is for Signal Orange. Classy period color.
I take it from your last email that you got the MFI pump working. That's good news. For years I've wanted an early S to fix up, preferably a 72'(my favorite). I saw an add in the local resale sheet for one (72'S project car cheap) I called but it was already gone. The guy told me that it needed the motor and rust repair but it had the sport seats yada yada. Anyway he sold it to some guy who's putting a Corvair engine in it. I do believe to each his own but that hurts. Oh well I've only been looking for ten years. Maybe I'll get lucky. Be sure and post some pictures when you get it back from the paint shop and get it assembled. Bobby 72' T Coupe 72' Roadster Project |

Are Signal Orange and Blood Orange the same colour? I always wanted one in Blood Orange, but now I'm confused! Anyway I think I'd go for the orange over yellow, much more a "classic" 70's colour than yellow, IMHO.

I don't believe that Signal Orange and Blood Orange are the same. Signal Orange is somewhat muted compared to Blood Orange, which has a reddish tint.

Hi all,
Andy am I right in thinking that those pics you have attached are Blood Orange, Signal Yellow, Blood Orange. Its seems quite dark for Signal Orange. It's also starting to look like we have a clear winner and that Signal Orange is the way to go. I have attached a pic of my car when I got it and in the background is a Signal Orange ST...... Nice. Also the interior in my S is tan, with factory recaros.... Anyone seen a Signal Orange car with a Tan interior_seems like a strange and load combination Alan.UK Thanks Alan |

I agree on the Signal Orange!
Incidentally, mine is Guards Red now, but started off life as Signal Yellow. I have always had it at the back of my mind that mine would return to Signal Yellow, or just maybe Signal Ornage should I ever get it sprayed. Also, mine came with a tan interior when new, though the addition of black Recaro sports seats means that i changed the rest of my interior to match these.... Not sure what tan would look like with Orange paint though. Finally, are you up and running with the MFI now? Mine is nearly there - I will update soon.

Alan, the pictures in my previous posting are of a Signal Orange '73 S & a Signal Yellow '71 S Targa. The colour of Jim Avis' ST looks to be Tangerine or Gulf Orange.
Never seen a Signal Orange car with 'beige' interior (usually it's black) but that's not to say it wasn't an option (I think anything was possible if you had the money & knew the right people!). By the way - who are you getting to do the bodywork/respray ? Andy |

While shopping I ran across a Gulf Blue 67 S with beige interior, with the Kardex included to show that's how it was ordered. As with Rolls-Royces, there are always some Porsches out there to make you think that may the custom-order option isn't always a good idea.
The worst Porsche I've ever seen was a late-model turbo, ordered by some pro athlete in his team colors, greenish-blue paint with orange all-leather interior. The car was being sold because the player had been traded to another team. Personally, I like Gulf Orange and Signal Orange on early cars, but some of the yellows are nice as well. The car in the link is Bahama Yellow. Emanuel

Alan, I think you should introduce a third option here. What about blood orange? Now I understand the difference between that and Signal Orange, I think Blood Orange is far prettier...anyone else?

Thanks for the links and advice,
I think I'm going to check the paint code on the car to make sure that I am right it is originally Signal Orange and not then tangerine. The car is being sprayed by friend of a friend whom works from his own home and produces some amazing results. I've got a little time before I need to buy the paint and make a final decision. I agree Blood Orange is nice but I don't think it was an option for a 71 car. Signal Orange is leading at present but I could really do with seeing one in the flesh, the difference between the pics from Andy's and Ottow?s posts shows how different colours can look in pictures. I'm also a little worried that orange and tan/beige will look a little too much. But then again that?s how it left the factory!! Decisions, decisions. Alan.UK PS. Hi Bobby and Marcus I did fix the MFI and I was over the moon about it. After days of cleaning/soaking it literally went click and started to work. I love MFI (now thats it's fixed). Oh here a quick pic of the S taken last week. It''s been stripped and etch primed now, also the new front slam panel is in. I've also had all the smaller parts blasted, ready for powder coating/paint, including the wheels. I'm going to polish these this weekend.

Anyhow, go for Signal Orange, Alan. It looks great - and that plus lime green and signal green are my favourite Porsche colours. It looks the archetypal '70s colour, and it is - yellow is much more common by comparison. For arguments sake, here's a pic of my car which is Tangerine, which looks a lot more red there than it really is: Let us know how it goes, and can't wait to see the finished pics - if you can't guess, I'd quite fancy a Signal Orange S!

Yellow cars are faster!
My car (Yeah, I know it's a NARP and no 911) was yellow and will be again.

None of the above cars are Signal Yellow '114' ... and, it was a standard color for '72/'73 models, not optional!
This is signal yellow:

It's so tough to go by photos because the color of the car changes depending on the time of day, condition of the sky and colors of the surroundings which all reflect on the car and change it's tint. The picture of the S in Andys' picture looks to be Tangerine that has a blue tint from the afternoon sky and it seems to have also picked up the color of the bricks.
I never thought of how similar Signal Orange and Gulf Orange must be. As I've seen Signal Orange in person but not Gulf Orange. But it sure looks like the Orange in the stripes of the 917 Gulf cars. Whatever the case I think the car is going to be special. Keep us posted, Bobby P.S. In looking at the pictures of the seats I noticed that the passenger side seat had more wear than the drivers side, then I remembered your in the U.K.... Dooh! Which reminds me. If you come across a nice passenger side (U.K.) armrest would you let me know. I'm looking for one to use on my drivers side (U.S.)in my project car. |

I didn't like signal orange when I bought my car, but over time I have grown fond of it. It was absolutely correct for the time (mine's a 1972), plus I have seen several pictures of Porsche race cars in that color, including factory cars. So it has authenticity and a racing connection.
To answer your original question, yes, that 911T is signal orange. The shot from the rear appears darker than reality due to less light. Look at the shot two lines down from the left front quarter; it is a more accurate color representation. Good luck!

Signal Orange has a little brown in it, make sure that's what you want. For yellows, check here: yellow

The darker orange shown above on the coupe is definately tangerine. My car was that color and my cars paint code was 2323, tangerine. If I look very closely I can see bits of that color, definately not the lighter signal orange of neighbor Ottawa911's car.
Allthough I like my cars pewter, somehow I wish it were original.
