Exclamation Cat. converter - 1987 carrera

1987 Porsche 911 - installed M&K Pre muffler with SW CHIP. excellent performance results, however, disappointing smell….
My original cat has 70,000 miles on it and I am considering going back to a cat. but would like to have less restrictive one as far as loss of HP and of course NO SMELL…any recommandations and experiences are most appreciated.
ALSO…if i redirect the muffler tip on my present set up ( M&K PRE MUFFLER & STOCK MUFFLER) pointing down or to the back will make a difference in smell coming in when idle at stop lights?

I have the exact same setup on my '84. I certainly understand your concern, I too have considered re-installing the cat to reduce the nasty unburned hydrocarbon smell. My problem is that the SW chip on my car is the one for cars with exhaust mods, and since it was installed by a PO, I don't have a stock chip to revert to. Since I'm uncertain how the chip will work with a totally stock exhaust, I'm reluctant to go there. I'd love to hear some more input on this.

Look up 100/200 cell cats.

It won't matter where you point the exhaust, it'll make it back into the cab.

I'm first in line if it also will fit a stock 86. Do you know if it will also work fine in mine?

Thanks!

David, sorry to hijack your thread! Was not my intent.

The chip is a 28 pin unit that will fit 87-89 cars. If you have an 87, you need to open up the DME first to see whether you have a 24 pin or 28 pin chip.

Sorry, it won't fit in earlier cars.

Not sure why you're having this problem. Over the past 20+ years I've run modified software (AutoThority when they were in business, Wong, custom burned) with cat delete pipes and both stock 1-in, 1-out and gutted stock mufflers and have never had a bad smell. I assume you reinstalled your O2 sensor? Any chance you might have damaged it during removal and reinstallation?

Not sure if there is a direct fit for the Carrera but the 100/200 cell cats were the hot ticket in the 996 world.

Not to hijack either, but I have a 2K factory chip.

PM to not hijack further.

I had the same s/u (wong chip, cat delete) couldn't take the smell any longer...replaced the cat and now the smell is gone...BUT...the power is down in the upper RPM's. I never noticed this till ethanol came on the scene.
I am looking at Magnaflow's metal core cats...small, light and havn't found any negative info on them.

David - If you go back to a cat I will take the M&K. My son would like one for his 85. By the way, I have M&K, stock muff, and sw chip on my 88 and no odor probs. Even if there were an odor prob it would be worth it for the shove at 4500.

Same set up here - no smell. Strange how some cars have it and others don't...

Pre muffler on my old SC also, no smell there either, and all we have here is E10 gas.

If you are at all interested, InTheWorks is back up. the web host was "hacked" and the site was down for two days.
These guy have a new design of the catalytic converter that can increase performance by up to 10% and reduce emissions up to 99%.

Even though they are still in start-up mode, this is really cool stuff!
