you should be able to identify excessive rod play by just push and pull. you cant tell much from rocking them back and forth. atleast thats been my experience from rebuilding vw and briggs engines

I checked this morning, there is no movement by push and pull just the small amount of lateral movement for all of them.

I thought I might update and cap off this thread I started last year. I continued the whole process, questions, findings, up to yesterday in my thread in the rebuild forum but just in case.

For the record Grady was pretty damn close just from what I provided. I don't really know why it sounded so much like a "knock" in the middle but all my problems were in the heads. I had not 1 but 2 broken springs (on opposite sides), my #4 valve wasn't seating properly and all my ex. valve guides were worn out of spec.

I took it all the way down to the crank, determined I had Nikasil pistons and cyl in pretty nice condition. The internals were all in great shape. I feel like this motor was rebuilt but they slapped the heads back on as-was some time not too long ago. I had a valve job, got new valve springs, replaced that one out valve and carefully put everything back together.

I enormously thank Howard Freeman, Grady, Bruce & others that have taken time out to answer questions on the forum as well as the phone, without all of this as a resource I'm not sure any layman would wind back up with something that ran.

I spent right at $2k for everything from dropping the engine to today including several new tools, machine work, parts, sealants, etc. (I didn't have to source new P&C's or other things that may have added up quickly). It took from last Sept. until early March but I'm a father of a 4 y/o, enjoy my happy wife who likes attention w/ a sometimes hectic job and only managed to spend an average of ~6-8hrs/wk on this.
