What gear were you in when it failed?
You may have managed to get it into the infamous 2 gears at once mode where you need to do a reset at the reverse switch. Do a search, there are numerous threads on how to fix that situation.
The gear shifter action is reversed at the coupling. Pushing the gear selector forward into 3rd pushes the coupler shaft at the back "in" to the transmission.
You may want to have a helper push the car on a level surface while you try to find neutral.

no neutral

hello and thanks so much for your help.(pelicans are the greatest)BUT,i took the brake light sender out so i could try and push out of reverse,i pushed on it hard while turning the wheels nothing,it would not move.so i gave it a little tap with hammer and the pin went inside.oh no.at this point what did i have to lose,so i took the cover off the bottom after draining the oil and started moving things around.and it popped back into neutral,i was able to adjust and it works great.i was afraid it was going to cost big $$$$.

Good to know you were able to get it fixed, and thanks for posting your solution.
I'm thinking everything that can happen to these cars has been posted here somewhere.
Really have to come up with a wild one to stump the huge pool of knowledge that this site has accumulated
