SSI early versus late 3.0 question...

I need some technical advice on early versus late 3.0 SSI applications.

I have an '82 3.0 SC which I plan on rebuilding using early large port ('78-'79) heads. I think the early 3.0 SSI's are thin flange with no OX sensor bung. I currently run the proper SSI's for late 3.0 (thick flange with OX sensor bung).

Will the late SSI's (forget the OX bung, I can seal it if necessary) thick flange that insert into the heads work on an early large port head? Will the flange insert into the early heads like the late heads?

Do I need to put longer head studs in for clearance?

...or do I just need to locate a thin flange set, sell mine, and be done with it?

Thanks

I think you'll have a problem with the extension that inserts into the later head. The flange thickness isn't an issue but I don't believe the early heads will accept the extension. Hopefully someone else can tell you for sure. I know that early SSI's work fine on later heads. I suppose you could cut off the extensions if they don't work. Otherwise you should have no trouble.

Yes...

I was afraid of that. When I bought them I had no idea I would be building a short stroke, large port head, early CIS, 964 cam engine and need the thin flange version.

I was amazed at the quality of the fit and finish. The extended flanges that insert into the heads fit perfectly.

With SSI production in limbo to boot...

When you do the rebuilding, take a head and see if it fits on the flange.
You will probably need longer studs, should be putting in new ones anyways.
