Father to Son: 77 911S

I've been lurking for a while and finally decided to post up an intro and start a thread for documenting progress.

My dad bought this 1977 911S back in 1999. Since then he has done a lot of work to it and has always told me that he'd pass it on to me one day. Over the years we have worked on it together, gone for drives, a few trips to John Walker's Swap meet and as most of you can relate to; this has become more than just a car. I have a lot of great memories growing up and working on this with my dad and he recently finally agreed to sell it to me.

My dad now lives in Walla Walla, WA and I live in Houston. Here are a few of it on after being loaded up onto the trailer to have to shipped down. I used Uship.com to find a shipper.

During the 14 years of ownership by my father the following has been done:

Rebuilt Engine:
2.8L JE 9.5:1 pistons and nickel cylinders
E cams
40 IDA Weber carburetors
PMO racing tall intake manifolds
Ported heads to 37mm on intake
Back dated exhaust manifolds with stainless stell dual in/out muffler
MSD 6 AL ignition with mega core plug wires
New alternator

Rebuilt transmission at time of engine build

Suspension:
Elephant Racing street track 1 suspension package
Tarett front and rear sway bars with drop links
RSR front struts
Bilstein rear socks
Poly Bronze bearings
Sway aways with 28mm hollow torsion bar

Interior:
Stripped interior
Corbeau racing buckets
Autopower roll bar
New headliner
Renegade pedals and aluminum foor rests
RSR door cards

Before I bought the 911 I was into watercooled VW's, mostly mk2's. I've had several and have done a few complete rebuilds, motor swaps, suspension work, a little paint work etc. so while I bought this car "built" I definitely know how to use a wrench and have a few more things planned for it.

Here are a few of my old 1989 Jetta GLI with a VR6 swap

And 1991 Golf with a G60 swap

Enough of all that, here's what you really came to see: 911 pictures

Iroc rep bumper, not in love with it, so it'll probably get changed

Sweet car. Must be a hoot to drive. I agree - lose the front valence.

Thanks guys.

I test fit a set of my friends spare e26's. This is a 17x10. A little too big but love the wheels.

Nice cars you have there but those undersized tires you have on the Jetta (if that's what you're going for) would look all wrong on the 911, a bit goofy really (in my opinion...).

Yeah I agree. I'm not going that route with the 911.

Sweet '77 - and thanks for sharing the Jetta shots as I am a serious '80s guy at heart and this was the ride to have in '89. That thing has a seriously clean bay...the '77 is nice too.

I'm a 'Jetta Guy' too. I have owned at least 4 and one of my daughters has owned 2. I'm not really into that exterior 'look' that you like and, no, please don't try to translate it to the 911 but, I gotta say, when I saw that VR6 engine bay picture, man, you have an eye for a minimalist set up and I can only imagine if you take that mindset and re-work the old 911 engine bay, it would be something very special. Of course, there are plenty of purists who'll argue you have to stay stock but, if the car is 'for you', you have to put your mark on it ;-) Have fun. Super car!

Was looking for something else through search and found this. Fellow mk2 vr6 jetta owner here. Seems like there are a few making the turn to the old 911's. They're familiar to work on so easy transition.

Great story Clay. My father came along with me to SC to buy my first 911, we are kinda just starting what you and your father have had going for the last 14 or so years. Good looking car, look forward to seeing you make it your own. I live quite a while up the road from you in Denton, however I come to Galveston atleast 1 time a year, have not taken the 911 down yet, however maybe someday we could get to know one another. Not sure how many 26-28 yr olds have the classic 911 thing going on, certainly nobody around my area. Good luck with the car.

Thanks guys.

The transition into the 911 from VW's has been fun.

Blake - Let me know if you ever come through Houston, there are several events in the area all the time through lsrpca.com

I haven't done too much to the car yet, just parts collecting, but I did do an autocross event this last weekend. Here are a few pics and instagram video.

Are you planning to change it back to the original bumper with bellows?

No, I have sold the IROC rep front bumper and bought a set of 965 bumpers and rockers. Also got some turbo sheet metal.

Got the front end pulled and the turbo fenders and 965 bumper fitted. I'm pretty happy with the fitment.

The car was originally Viper Green Metallic. I'd like to go back to a green but Viper Green is a little too much for me. I'm thinking maybe Fresco Green from the B5.5 Passats or Olive Green Metallic from the Cayenne.

Width wise; it fits pretty decent. I will need to trim and reshape the wheel well part of the bumper to flow better with the fenders

The turbo fenders are original narrow body fenders with original turbo flare welded on. There is some rust and who knows what's under all the bondo so I dropped them off to be sand blasted bare inside and out. If they are too far gone, i'll just cut off the flares and weld them onto the original fenders from my car which are in great shape. I'm hoping I can save them though.

Got the passenger side fitted and the rear bumper fitted better. Fits much better than the front but will still need a little work.

The rear sticks out a ton so I may try to tuck it a few inches
