J West Headlight Relay Kit

I came across a new, unused J West relay kit sold on Pelican and was wondering if I can use it in my 1970 911T with H4s? I was planning to install additional TTG lights and hood mounted Cibies and thought the relay may assist in preserving the electric switches in the car.

Does this kit work in my 1970, I see the instructions state it is for 1974-89. Is there a required modification to the kit or my car to make it work?

Vr,
Scott

Yes it woks, you just have to mount the relays in a different area because of where our fuse boxes are located.

I did it on my 82 SC. I got the parts from Parts Express. I could use the socket with the cable as it came. I didn't need any additional cable.

Socket

Relay

See my install at Head Light Upgrade

Rothaus,
I reviewed your link , but did you install it on a 1982 SC? The kit is made for the 74-89 years. What I'd like to know is how to hook up the kit to an earlier 911, a 1970.

Scott

I don't know exactly the wiring for a 1970 car. But from what I remember from way back when is that German headlights were fused with 4 fuses, 2 for the low beams and 2 for the high beams. This is to insure that at least one light is one when one fuse blows. So, the safe way to install relays is to put one in each of the 4 light circuits. You can just power the relay coils from the 4 fuse outputs. The relay switch outputs should then connect the 4 wires to the 4 lamp filaments with the battery plus terminal. Of course you need also 4 new in-line fuses to make those connections to the battery safe. I did exactly that in my '79SC but the same principle should work for 1970 cars. If you need further help I could come up with a general wire diagram.

Hi Scott, take a look at this post. I think you will find what you need. I used one relay for the low beam and one for the high beam.

The yellow and white wire that comes from the light switch is used to trigger the relay instead to supply power to the lights. The relay get's the power direct from the battery.

Hope this is what you looking for.

The schematic in the "dorkiphus" post with the 4 relays is pretty much the same hook-up I used. I prefer the 4-relay approach to still have one light on if one circuit fails.

Rothaus and Porwolf,
That should do it. I'll try to hook up the relay next weekend.
Will let you all know.
Vr,
Scott
