1986 Carrera Cabrio wide body.

Removed all the AC junk and the radiator under the engine cover. Can now see most of the engine through the cover louvers.

Brown747. I'm very curious about your fan. Is that new or did you have it refinished. looks very nice. The previous owner of my car replaced it with a used one that looks good but its very dull, no cadmium/zinc coating left on it.

I've noticed several of you have installed a metal fan strap that is drilled out. Is there any particular logic behind it ? (weight savings? is it really that much?)

Here is a pic showing the process of getting the engine cleaned up. I call this episode "The Rubber Explosion"® as pretty much every chunk of rubber in the engine compartment was toast.

I had the intake out because I found some cracked gaskets...
In the process of removing the intake I found the fuel line crimps were so gone that the hose would spin around like a bearing...
In the process of removing the gaskets I discovered the plastic intake spacers were crumbling...
In the process of rerouting the the vacuum lines I found one was cracked about a third of the way around...
In the process of reattaching the large (1") plastic breather hose I discovered that it was so brittle it fractured when I tried to reconnect it to the engine...
In the process of installing the brand new large breather hose I discovered it was actually made of very soft rubber so the old one was WAY beyond toast...

I did get the engine nice and cleaned (With some help. My back was completely out at this point...). Notice the nice block off plates for the intake that I built. Nice to have in the toolbox.
Once it was done it idled and ran better then it had in years.
Gee, I wonder why?

Started assembly of some freshly powder coated tin tonight. Plus new engine carrier, bracket, and muffle bracket. Engine bay cleanup is well under way!

Oh my god that's beautiful! May I ask how much all that carbon set you back? Did you make it yourself or order it? I've been playing with the idea of getting into composites, with engine shrouds, valve covers, fans, air filter housing and perhaps even exhausts for the old air cooled Porsches.. It's optimistic, I know, but it would be awesome if done right!
