Installed 964 cam in 3.0 SC!
Just wanted to say I installed the 964 cams in my stock SC and set it to 1.9mm advanced. I rebuilt the dist from instructions on here and all I have to say is wow! Lots of grunt and above 4k holy crap! Now all I am wondering is should I get the dist recurved. Thoughts?

CAUTION, SLIPPERY SLOAP! yes a recurve will wake it up even more, so will carbs or ITB FI and headers and high compression pistons and dual plugs and ring gear and close ratio and more cubic centimeters and bigger tires and...........

I have those cams in a 3.0 with the 3.2 Max Moritz high compression pistons. Scoots the 73.5 right along. Enjoy.

Kenneth, did you do anything else 'while you were in there' besides the cams?
I've read that you get more high-end torque but sacrifice low end. Can you tell the difference? Also are you running stock exhaust or modified?

tirwin - I have a Millia Miglia Single in dual out muffler that I love the sound and look of. I decided to advance the cams for more low end torque sacrificing a bit at the high end ponies. And I have a K&N fliter but thats it.

My 81 been built to- 98mm pistons- 964 cams- B & B exhaust. Still has smaller SC heads.
It pulls strong to 6K. Fun engine! Pulls stronger than my 88 Targa. Anyone have theirs on a dyno yet? Just wondering.....

1980 3.0 with Elgin "SC Sport" grind cams(similar to the ones being discussed) - also EFI, but stock intake and EDIS ignition. Stock exhaust with hollowed out cat. This is at the wheels, so a bit better than stock which is BHP. Also note how flat and wide the peak torque is. Don't have the "before" picture, but you can really feel it once it gets to 3500 +. Can't tell if there is any low-end loss.

Presumably the 964 cam has the same positive effect on the euro SC motor. Has anyone dynoed a euro 205 3.0 with 964 cams, SSI and a two in one out sport muffler ?

Dyno for me was 209 RWP: Engine was a '81 3.0 with the following:
Upgrades include 1) Max Moritz 3.2 liter pistons and cylinders, 2) 964 cams, 3) Raceware hardware, balanced rods, Carrera oil pump. New parts included: intake valve sleeves, rod bearings and rods balanced, and rocker arms. Transmission clutch disk, pilot bearing and fork were replaced. CIS and early exhaust. In my 73.5 Targa...

Bob,
My was about the same other that nothing done to the bottom end but a complete B & B Exhaust was added. Stock late CIS intake too. Runs good to 6K then fall on its butt. Going to get it Dyno'ed after finishing the suspension. Thanks for the info!

My Indy also recommended getting larger pistons that just slide in. Are both mods necessary/ give a significant change in feel? I changed the plenum and exhaust/cats on my 997 S and was amazed how much lighter and livelier the car felt. |

This is the build my Indy recommended. Did it significantly change the feel? Make it lively and give it more edge?

Bit of an old thread, but no point starting a new one..
Is 1.9mm the preferred setting for when installing 964 cams into a 3.0? I have a Carrera 3.0 motor, totally stock with stock low comp pistons.. no I don't want to change them yet, but will soon have a set of 964 cams to try.. the motor also has EFI, with AEM controlling spark too.. and ITBs.. |

I set mine to 1.9 but it loves timing and duke at this setting but the mid range is amazing

3.3ss
About 5 years ago I rebuilt the 3.0 in my 1980 SC. Items changed/added include 964 cams, LN Engineering 100mm cylinders, Mahle 10.1:1 pistons, Carrera large port heads w/twin plug ignition. Electromotive XDi crank fire ignition, etc. I set the cams at 1.3mm advance and sacrificed a bit of low end torque for more mid and top end power. This engine is still running CIS although it is using an early SC large port airbox and has been modified to more closely resemble the 73.5 CIS layout. I have the ignition interrupt set at 7500 rpms and it pulls like a freight train all the way up! This engine shows that CIS doesn't have to stop making power at 6K rpms! A nice feature of the XDi ignition is that the timing is infinitely adjustable via 4 control knobs on the controller box and completely does away with the distributor. Eliminating the dizzy means there will be no high priced caps and rotors to buy ever!
