I changed out to the MSD in my 69, and it was one of the best upgrades that I did for the car. I highly recommend them.

Great tip the one about replacing the coil.
I have a friends 911 SC with a no start condition. Fuel pressure ok, strong spark, compression ok, leakdown test good, replaced distributor finger which was partially burned, new spark plugs with correct gap, checked timing with strobe while turning over engine, used vacuum cleaner to blow air into the intake and find air leaks. Everything was correct. No strange mechanical noises from engine either. I was puzzled, didn't want to go the next step and take engine out. Then I surfed all possible Porsche forums on earth and come upon this thread. Some mechanic found that by replacing the coil the engine started. So I took a spare NGK U1061 Coil, installed it and car started at first turn of key. Incredible. After some read I found that under high pressure inside the cylinder the spark has more resistance and finds its way somewhere else to ground. Inside the Coil I guess. Anyway, problems with starting? Have a spare coil at hand and use it if everything else fails. |
