I don't know why anyone would want to pay homage to anything about that early concept - they don't come much uglier, or more ridiculous looking, than that thar vehicle!

You've seen one restored 356, you've seen them all.
+1 Couldn't have said it any better...but I love the restored ones too.

Seems like Foose's go-to move is shortening and narrowing bumpers. I don't think I have seen an episode where he didn't do that.

You could tell he was a little frustrated in the "planning" part with the insider, even saying something to the tune of "So what can we do that isn't completely stock?"

Overall I didn't love it, but also think it could have been much worse.

All said it's a lot nicer outcome than leaving the owners to their own devices. Did see where was when picked up? Under a tarp in a vacant lot. And it hasn't run since they bought it?

Yeah that car was headed for a full concourse resto. Not.

I agree.

I am not a fan of making the rear visibility go way DOWN while driving the car. That rear window was not a great idea. The car was going to rust away and the rust and crash damage are fixed properly.

I have said it before, if Foose did his standard "overhaul" of my daily driver El Camino I would be pissed. I don't want 20 inch wheels, slammed to the ground and a $5,000 stereo with a two tone paint job and no useful bumpers.

I know many people love his cars but they are not my style. I can appreciate his talents, but I don't want my cars with the Foose treatment.

I feel the exact same way about the Magnus style 911s. I can appreciate his car but I don't want my car to get the Magnus treatment. Just my opinion. He can do whatever he wants to do to his cars and I will enjoy watching him do his thing.

If it was the husbands idea to contact Foose/Overhaulin, then he knew what he was getting into. Foose has never restored a car to 100% original. If the husband wanted it 100% original he would have paid out the nose for it to get done by a Porsche specialist. I'm no insider but I'm under the impression that the cars owner paid nothing for the overhaul? Having said that, other than the rear window, the car could be turned back to stock without that much work.

I guess you could compare this car to those 'Outlaw' or Magnus Walker cars, and everyone has their own idea of what looks good.

If they properly repaired the rust in the body, it should be OK and hopefully the owners will be happy with their car.

BTW, I've always liked the concept of Lotus cars, and I saw the Europa build just before the 356 episode. I definitely liked that car when all done, though I could never fit in one.

Maybe I missed mention of it because I have mostly breezed through the comments, but do you guys realize that the Emorys helped Chip with this car? They probably did most of the heavy lifting when it comes down to it.

I like it.
Another Popsche saved.
And one could always buy it, spend another bucket of money to restore it to original and then resell it again to another lost soul with way too much money (and very little sense).

Any pics of the finished product? I missed the show, not big on the Overhauling program anyway. In the short clip the body looked pretty bad.

Go to velocity.com the click the overhaulin link. There are 3 or 4 clips of the 356 build. I would embed but I'm replying by my phone

Chip Foose is absolutely horrible. I would never let him within sight of one of my cars or motorcycles. He has very bad taste, and all his stuff looks the same.

And I agree, give me "Wheeler Dealers" any day.

That Overhaulin episode was a collaboration with Rod Emory from Emory Motorsports, AKA the family that literally invented the Outlaw Porsche. We wouldn't call hotrodded Porsches "Outlaws" without the Emory family and Emory Motorsports.

my god!! could that steering wheel be any further off?? can't say i love the fact that they modded a 356, but there are so many 'outlaws' out there already, that many of us love, why is this any different? i must say though, i cringed when i saw the 356 on Overhaulin' - haven't watched the episode.

Pictures of 356

Here are some pictures of the Foose built 356. You can see for yourself that nothing was destroyed. Worst case, it became an "Outlaw".
