Alternator or VR high volt spike
Driving last night and my Escort radar detector starts powering down. After turing it on again I see a warning of high voltage and it shuts down warning me to unplug it. It had been working fine earlier in the day. The alternator/battery light never came on. I think I noticed that the gauge lights may have been brighter as I accelerated. I am guessing that it is either the alternator or VR, I will get a VM on it later today and see what it looks like. My question is does a new alternator come with the VR or are they separate. The last one i did was on my 1970 which had a separate external VR. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Assuming you are talking about the '89 in your profile, the VR is internal to the alternator and is installed in a new one.
The alternator light on the gauge normally only lights up on low voltage, not high voltage. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Sorry 89 is the one in question. Just measured the voltages at the battery.
Car off 12.9 running 14.2-14.5 varied a bit when the car was revved, never got above 14.5 Looks like I can set the radar detector to display voltage so I can track things and see if I get the "spike" again.
