3.6/SC conversion, accelerator cable question

My trusty SC has had some issues of late......3 crap the bed events in the last two weeks. All are fixed, I have an awesome tool box and a AAA Premium card.

The one last night was a pisser......the cable from the bell crank up to the throttle body snapped up at the throttle arm. I looked at it and itz a freaking bicycle shifter cable.

I have those parts sitting at the house.....

Got home under idle power as I was just 1/2 mile away......replaced the cable,,,,left rear wheel removal and vice grips and clamps.....

Anyways, what if anything can I use to make this more robust......beyond inspection and replacement like a timing belt on a well set up 944?

On my conversion I do it like this:

+1 That is exactly how I did mine on my 3.6 transplant. Solid as can be, and no mickey mouse bicycle parts!

OK, so that is the back end of the engine.....

You have rod ends from the top of the engine to the throttle body. Is that all stock or did you do a custom fix? Not afraid of that but if I can get the parts from a source used, I can cut costs.

Thank you for your response.

The cable was a Timmins invention.....along with a few other items......

I used a shortened 964 cruise control cable for my 3.6 conversion.....a little more sturdy than a bike cable I'd guess....so far so good.

As I recall (I did my 3.6 22yrs ago, so foggy memory), I think it's just a bellcrank pedestal and rod from an earlier engine, and you also use the early long rod from the pedestal to the 915 transmission bellcrank. Just like the 3.0s.

Its the stock bellcrank from a k-jet engine, was probably used on the Motronic also.

The modifications I have done is to add the ball joints that the rod is connected to.
I also made 3 holes in the shroud so I could mount the bellcrank. Actually I just enlarged the 3 existing holes that is in the right places.

On a stock 3.6 engine you will also need to remove or mode some vacuum hoses and environmental crap.

I modified a 964 throttle cable. By modified I mean I measured and cut off some of the sheathing so it fit against the engine tin. Has worked well for the past few years including some track duty.

In essence, you basically set it up with the same very solid, simple, and bomb proof components your good old SC used to have!

Yes!
A properly done throttle cable will probably work good as well, but I like the old style.

Until the 8mm nut on the bellcrank falls off going up an off-ramp on a freeway ... Oh, me ...

Interesting read. Thanks and good luck

An additional thought on the bellcrank pedestal. The bushings were originally plastic and they wear out! This causes linkage/full throttle problems. I found mine by accident when I had the motor out. I would venture a guess that 75% of the 30+year old/100K+ mile Pcars out there have worn through plastic bushings! Here's a bronze replacement bushing from our host, two needed. 901-423-253-00-M105

this isn't the first time that happened from what I remember...SmileWavy

BTW, the modded 964 throttle cable all the way through the tunnel works perfectly fine for me....

The later bellcranks from the Carreras have metal bushings if I recall correctly. But the SC style crank might be better because it's set up for the straight rod you want to use? See the pics below and see how the Carrera style was set up to use a curved rod and therefore the ball end is at a different position. Seems like the SC style is more straightforward?

Just guessing here. When I did a 3.6 swap with a friend we inherited the installation and along with it the "custom" cable arrangement that came with it. Actually he bought Pelican member pbs911's '78 SC targa car off ebay ($17K was a steal) and stripped it of everything 3.6-related to put it in an '88 3.2 Carrera. The 3.2 went back into the '78 SC Targa. Probably a pretty rare case of 3.0>3.6>3.2 conversion on that car, wouldn't you say?

Patrick Motorsports has one that is excellent. I helped a buddy make the change from the Timmins design. You do need the hands of a 3 year old to get back there. Very hard to do.

Thanks but I would rather loofa with a cheese grater than buy anything from those asshats.

Jcslocum 09-15-2014 04:14 PM

The thought of you with a loofa is scary enough. The cheese grater part doesn't register.

You may have to put your ass hat avoidance device on standby while you buy one. It works very well and is a very good upgrade.

$290 for a simple piece of Bowden cable? Outrageous! The SC bellcrank and rod linkage solution shown above worked flawlessly for 20+ years of Pcars, from Solex carbs through Carrera DME. Couldn't be more simple or solid. I did my 3.6 conversion back in '92, long before Patrick or Timmons stuff was available. When I looked at the 3.6, and then the 3.0SC motor I was removing, it became patently obvious that stealing the bellcrank and rod assembly from the 3.0 was a simple and very effective solution. Worked perfectly lo these past 22 years!
By the way, I also could not accept the fact the 3.6 964 had no on engine oil cooler.
due to that damned power steering pump, that I removed. So I retrofitted an on engine cooler, because no one told me I couldn't ! Now with just a Carrera front fender cooler assy, along with the engine cooler, I run max 210deg in 90+ weather, with the air on!
