OK, the DE bug has got me. Been hunting for some new shoes for the 85 Carrera, and I've found a really decent deal on a set of 17" 993 replicas [I know, Fuchs are lighter]. The specs are: Fronts - 17x7.5 with 23mm offset with 205/50/17 , the rears are 17x9 with 15mm offset with 255/40/17. All Kumhos.
Useage is 75% street, 25% DE. These are a bit bigger all round than the 16 X 7 & 8 that I was after. Question is...will they fit an 85 non-turbo without rubbing?? Rolled front fenders is a given! Anyone running these sizes on a carrera/SC body at Euro ride height? I'm also wondering if these sizes have a downside for handling - aside from the obvious increase in unsprung weight. There are sure to be a bunch of gotchas I don't know about, right? Really appreciate your advice, guys. Tony K 85 Carrera |

I run 225's and 255's on 17" 8 and 9. No rubbing with my S02's some minor rubbing with the larger track tires or the same size (wider tire width). If your offsets are ok, I would recommend 215's and 245's for track tires to eliminate rubbing problems.

Thanks 89. Wondering if I need to budget [!!] for keeping my stock 6&7x16s for street, and the 17s for track. Are you happy with this setup for street use?

My 72 has the same combo you described. It has C2 rear flares, so it's the same fender dimensions you have. No rubbing. Drove it on the street quite a bit and no complaints.

After a season of DE running SO2's on 17" C2 turbo replica cup wheels, I'm getting ready to buy a set of track wheels/tires. Although I love the look of my current wheels, I've decided not to put R-compound tires on them and use them on the track, since they are not the strongest wheels. Late model wheels from a 964/993/996 ("late offset" wheels) will need large spacers to make them fit our older cars ("early offset" wheels - mine is an '87 Carrera), which is a weaker setup. Yes, you can buy replicas (like mine) that require little or no spacers, but they effectively have a built in spacer - take a look at the deep hub! Again, not the strongest. When you put sticky R rubber on these wheels and tear around the track, it puts an enormous sheer force on the hub. So... what I'm going to do is keep my 17" replicas and SO2's for the street, and buy dedicated track wheels/tires. This seems to narrow things down to two options: (1) Buy a set of 7X16" (front) and 9X16" (rear) Fuchs, say from a 930. This will give the correct offset for our cars, and they are very strong. (2) Buy a custom lightweight forged wheel such as Fikse, Kinesis, or BBS, which are made to suit your particular car (i.e., correct offset - no spacers). Both are expensive options, but I want a strong and lightweight setup.
