My wife had a Mazda. She told me that one day at the mall some dork came bounding across the parking lot to ask her if she was part of the club.

She gave him the "leave me alone" glare until he left her alone.

After hearing that story I don't wave anymore except to return a wave or if is a classic.

Different owners now days.

I drive around and see a fair amount of other Porsches and never get a wave back while I'm in my Carrera.

Is it a new generation vs. old generation thing?

I'm beginning to feel like an ********* waving at people that just ignore me.

thanks,

I always get waves from other air-cooled guys, and lots of other people.

When I had just bought my 84, a beautiful blond in a nice new Cab gave me a headlight flash and I was too slow to respond before I was past. Then I felt like the dork.

Which headlights? I'd wave to that!

I hesitate to wave at Boxters but will heartily wave back if one waves first. Water-pumper guys locally tend to wave. I was out for a long drive last week, way out in the boonies, when a 993 went the opposite direction. I waved but the driver seemed not to see me or my car. Takes all kinds I suppose. I'll still offer a wave 99% of the time. As for other types of classics, I got a wave from a guy in a TR-6 recently. Comrades in a sense.

I wont even waste my time with the the Cayennes & Macans and Im getting pretty frustrated with the water pumpers. My girl summed it up perfectly. "It's not a passion or experience for them, it's just another new luxury car they're leasing and it might as well be a BMW or Lexus". Hell, I wave to any old classics; American German English whatever, if your driving one then you must have a little enthusiasm in ya.

Unrelated story, sorta. Last month I had to pass a string of cars doing 45 in a 55, guess what was leading/jamming up the pack? a brand new Cayman. A little tear rolled off my cheek..

Air cooled: Always
924/944/928: Usually
Water cooled 911/Boxster/Cayman: 50-50
Cayanne/Macan/Panamera: Never

I have also exchanged thumb ups with other classic/sports car drivers, no matter if it is classic BMW, Jaguar, Mustang, Lotus, Ferrari, Air cooled VW, or something else.

Back in the day

When I was a kid and my dad had his Speedster all the sports cars would flash their lights in passing. Then it was only the Porsches that flashed their lights at each other. Seems like nowadays most of the vintage sports cars are flashing and waving again.

I give a flash or wave to any old classic cars, not just Porsches. Anyone that drives a 30 year old car has to be an enthusiast, and I don't care what marque anymore. However, a headlight flash from another air cooled Porsche always identifies a true aficianado.

Alive and well I'm happy to report.

Took the 87 on a 1hr+ spin on shoreline last weekend, exchanged a record number of waves, 3 from air cooled brethren, and pleasantly surprised ... 2 from later years and even 1 from some kids in a BMW. My apologies if I missed returning your gesture while hustling down 9.

I never see air cooleds around, only newer Porsche SUV's driven by the clueless look at me bunch. Or newer 911's driver by their toolshed husbands.

No, it's not like motorcycles. Modern P drivers don't wave. I certainly show my respects to earlier 911s while driving my '78. They smile and wave.

Agreed, modern P drivers, especially water pumpers, don’t know or acknowledge their older ancestors. I hardly see any older 911s except during a rallye or PCA event. I often get more waves from hot rods, classic American steel or chopper/biker types. As someone mention, those that drive old appreciate what they drive and others who do the same.

I wave at any 911 whether I am in the 993 or GT3T. Never try with SUV or panny unless they wave to me (never happens). I get 90% wave backs, but the water pumper is an unusual color so I think that helps.

I have an 88 911 and a Cayenne and I always wave, but I have noticed the Cayenne folks never wave back and seldom even look my way. The 911 people always wave back.
