In the aircooled VW scene we used to do the 'hang loose' sign when we saw another aircooled enthousiast even when we were with our daily driver. Seems the new kids don't know that sign anymore. I wave at any old (loved/cared) car. When I get some tumbs up it sure makes my day. Got the opposite to when I was once at the trafic lights in my 74 911 with a brand new special limited edition 991 or so next to me, the guy didn't even looked up...

I wave at every air cooled. The hit rate is 90% on a wave back.
It's not age related as far as I can tell - I seem to get more enthusiasm from younger drivers who know. Positive reinforcement. Water pumpers the hit rate was so low (<10%) - I quit. And then some 2020 911 waves at me and I feel like a jerk... So I wave at everyone again.

I get a lot more waves in my '88 Guards Red 911 than I ever did in my Metallic Gold '85. Was surprised to find that color seems to play a role.

I find the opposite. I get waves in my Targa but not my Cayman. I like them both and usually wave to any Porsche I see.
Found a few aircooled owners that began sermons to me about old vs new when driving my Cayman. Ya ya ya, I have one at home. I drive the Cayman because in the summer I prefer a car that has AC that actually works.

I haven't seen an aircooled 911 coming the other way to wave to for over a year. I used to see between two and five any day of the week

I wave to everybody if I notice them - I get 90% wave backs when in the 87 Coupe, when in the 928...not so many. Porsche drivers prolly wondering why the Toyota driver is waving at them
If I get an enthusiastic response with the 928 its usually someone who knows what they are but isn't in a Porsche, at least at the time.

the "wave" thing is getting less and less. Many times I got embarrassed. Once, I got this type of look when I came close and start talking to a newer turbo. From that time on, I only wave to whoever waves at me first.

Flashing headlights sends the wrong message.
A simple wave of the hand means a lot more.

^ poll I would flash but I try to use the turn signal stalk as little as possible for fear it’s brittle innards will crumble to dust.

Anytime I see an Air-Cooled I get and give a wave. These cars are too special but most modern P-Car drivers don't get it. Yesterday I saw a teenager behind the wheel of a Toyota taking a cell phone video of my SC as he pulled along side in traffic. Gave me a wave and a thumbs up. The car still appeals to teenagers just as it did to me when I was one!

The young guys around here have started buying "classic" rice cars and spending huge amounts on paint, wheels and engine. These guys have started waving and coming over to talk cars. Really nice guys.
The water cooled Porsches seem to be driven by angry women in a hurry to get somewhere - maybe to pick up the kids from soccer. |

I don't initiate a wave unless there's another aircooled car. It's very rare a water pumper Porsche would wave. I get lots of thumbs up from road bicyclist though!

I rarely and I mean rarely do I see another air cooled P car out that's not in my circle. Lot's of corvettes, muscle cars, VW's, older imports, and hot rods in my area. There are a lot of nice 80's exotics in town but they only see the light of day for a quick trip up to a c&c and then quickly taken back home and hidden away. I give everyone thumbs up and weirdly enough I mostly get acknowledged by the older imports. My car is low, bright, and sounds angry so maybe they are intimidated lol.

Lots of later 911s and bikes but no classics today on my Hwy 9 run .... waved at a couple but not sure if they did in return, hard to see thru the sloped windshields of the newer models.
