Option "577" Heated & Tinted Front Windshield

So my '84 Cabriolet has the "577" option, heated and tinted front windshield. Can someone explain exactly what the purpose is? It doesn't seem to really do anything when I pull out the "defroster" looking button.

A heated windshield will defrost itself the same as a rear window defroster works. For windshields, there is usually a very thin conductive material laminated between two sheets of glass. When electrical current is applied, it heats up.

I suppose they can't use wires like in the rear window because it would be too distracting to peer through a bunch of lines running across the windshield while you're driving.

We have that in our 1983 930. Works wonders in rain. There are tiny filaments in the windshierld, not unlike some Mercedes Benz rear windows.
The windshield is about 60% more expensive. Maybe yours has been changed with a non-heated one?

If you have the original windshield you'll be able to see the filaments on close inspection.

I guess since I never drive in the rain or when it's cold I've never noticed what it can do. Also, the windshield was replaced once but I can't tell if it is the correct one. I have the original receipt from Stoddard and the part # is 911-541-011-04. Is there an easy way to identify the part #?

I have a heated windshield. Look closely through the glass & you should see very thin wavy lines going top to bottom. this pic is taken through my screen against a sheet of paper.

Hmm.Thats not very clear! Blinkin' compression!

There doesn't appear to be any imbedded wires for heating. Must be the standard windshield. It does have a single wire that goes around the outside about a half inch from the molding and then down the middle. I'm assuming this is an antenna lead?? If so, I wonder where the lead is. I'd like to connect it to my radio since I have ongoing power antenna issues. What do you think?

With the windshield mounted antenna, there is a small FRAGILE wire at one bottom corner. You have to drill a small hole (ouch) to let the wire go into the front compartiment. Then you have to use an antenna amplifier.
If you have an antenna, you don't have a heated windshield. they are mutually exclusive. Also, all the heated windshields have the tinted top, now, the original untinted ones are NLA.

Thanks for the input. I guess I'll scratch off my option list the heated and tinted windshield. I wonder what I should do with the knob on the dash?
