How long, exactly???

On the 996 owners are different thread, NOSTATIC wrote: "but I figured there would be some people (like Curt) that had been around the marque for a long time." So, that made me wonder...just how long have those who post here been around the marque??? I'll confess to having bought my first Porsche before many who post here were born...In the fall of 1966 I bought a '66 912. But "around the marque" a few years before that. My buddy John had a 1960 356B, purchased in 1964. I helped him work on that car, and we took many drives in it. Guess that was the real start of my "addiction"...

i bought my first porsche a little over a year ago, but my first experience with the marque was when my father brought home a guards red sc when i turned 16 (unfortunately not for me lol, it belonged to one of his freinds) he did however let me take it out on my own "to put gas in it" that was the summer of 88', that was a good time.

I have been a Porsche owner since may 1999, but I have been a Porsche fan for many years before that.

BTW the headline could be misunderstood

I purchased my first-car in 1979. I was in my freshman year of college and I spent every penny I had to buy it.

Bought my '72 in the spring of 1991. I was 21. I was looking for a convertible Chevelle, Camaro or Mustang, (60's vintage of course.) when I spotted the Flame Red '72 911 Targa. The car came with the engine in 5 different boxes. It was towed to my house, and I proceeded to rebuild the engine in the room I was renting while I was going to college.

So, the first Porsche I ever drove was my own, and I had to rebuild it first! Do you have any idea how much I anticipated driving that thing? I can't count how many times I sat in it making Brmmmm Brmmmm sounds while the engine sat in pieces on a huge piece of cardboard in a corner of my room! (Little did I know that once it was running, I would spend the next year of my life figuring out every subtle nuance of the MFI system.)

Needless to say, that was the end of my musclecar fascination. I used to know every fact and figure about Chevy musclecars. (I owned a '66 Chevelle Malibu while I was building the Porsche.) Now, I've forgotten most of it, while those areas of the brain have been rededicated to things like Fuch's part numbers, and a 3 dimensional image of the '72 oil system schematic. i've had full-on "Porsche on the Brain" ever since. It's a good drug.

Cool

I bought my first Porsche in 1975. A '63 "S" basket case. I put it back to together as best I could, learning as I went....it was nearly 20 years until the addiction resurfaced. In 1995, I found an original '65 SC CAB. Then I found a '69 S and then a '72 S, and....NOW I'm lookin'....(for a '73RS or a 98 Carrera 4 CAB....)

When I was 18, a friend bought a brand new 1975 914 1.8. When I drove it, I couldn't believe how well it handled. At the time, I was ignorant of the "not a real Porsche" label on these cars. Also didn't realize that this '75 1.8 was the slowest of all the 914's, just knew that it handled like a go kart. I bought a used one in 1977. Loved the handling but got tired of getting my doors blown off. So.....

1973 911T in 1978 (for $10k,what were RS's going for?)
1970 914/6 in 1980 (owned by Hugh Downs, who?)
1970 914/6 in 1982
1970 914/6 in 1986
1970 914/6 in 1988 (steel GT flares. wish i still had it)
1978 911SC in 1988 (told my wife it was "her" car)
1975 914/6 in 1991 (2.6L, with 2.8rsr pist/cyl)
1989 944T in 1993 (13k miles, cool car)
1970 914/6 in 1997 (3.0 hi comp, see a pattern?)
1973 911T in 2002 (full circle?, will be autox/street)

Nice trip down memory lane.

1983, I bought a well used 914 in the summer between Soph and Junior university years.

I had a 69 SS Camero that needed a rebuild, I needed transportation and had just enough cash to get the 914. In retrospect I paid too much.

Except for a brief stint between selling the 914 and purchasing a 911, I've had continuous pcar ownership ever since.

"just how long have those who post here been around the marque???"

Well, I've been "around the marque" longer than I've owned one of the cars. I even bought a 1st Edition 'Excellence Was Expected' in the 70's and actually read the entire thing! I went to many, many races during the heyday of the 934's and 935's. Couldn't afford to buy a 911 until 1983 (that can't be 20 years ago, can it?!). -- Curt

I bought a 68 911 in 1975......oh my that was a long time ago!

I was a student, broke and it was cheap, repainted orange and truely awful. I wish I had it now.

My first Porsche was in 1981, a '78 911 SC Sport, a fantastic dark metallic Petrol Blue.
A 1977 Carrera 3.0 followed in '82
1980 928S in 1986
1974 Carrera 2.7 in 2000
1989 944T in 2001

Still got the 2.7, now becoming a 3.0 RS

Around the marque since '66 when friends had a '57 Speedster with a 4 cam Carrera motor thay they had scrafed up somewhere.

Didn't buy a Porsche until '72, a used '72 914, and then in 1980, a '77 Targa. Lotsa aircooled VDub stuff, though.

Bought my 71 in the spring of 85, my senior year of high school. Always loved the Porsche. It is today my only Porsche I've ever owned or driven. Someday I hope to have another, but this one I will probably never part with.
Funny thing is that I have learned more about the marque and my 71 in the last 6 months than in the first 15 years of ownership thanks to this board, having her back on the road after a long sleep, and devolping a craving to know more about the car that has held my eye for so long.
For me I have always loved the Porsche, I only recently have become addicted.

Bought my first P-car in 1971, a '64 356C. We actually drove away from our wedding in it. Less than a year latter, sold it and bought a '66 911. And then about year after that, sold the 911 and bought a brand new 914 2.0. In my mind's eye, it was the best Porsche we have ever owned. I'll never forget picking it up from the selling dealer after its inital (and free) service. The woman in front of me in line went totally hysterical when presented with the bill for her 911. We sold it later becasue my wife was too pregnant to get in and out. Don't ask what we bought!!!

That was the last P-car for 22 years but in 1995 I started "sampling" the various models including a 944, 911 SC, another 914 2.0, and have settled very comfortably with the 1970 E Targa.

started noticing them around 1970 (at the age of 9) when my dad built a dune buggy starting with a VW pan. Had serious lust in about 1976 when my HS water polo coach had a silver 914 (and one of the other coaches had an orange one). Many years of being a starving musician and/or starving student precluded any purchase though. Wasn't until recently that a spare car was a possibility. So 30 years or 1 year I guess is the answer.
