What are you guys using to protect the rear of the 6.5" door speaker?

i wouldn't cut 6.5's in the rear, if you really want rear speaker just stick with the stock size (4x6) they are only for rear fill so you don't need much back there.
you can get foam protectors from crutchfield for a few bucks and cut it so it acts like a shield for the top of the speaker only as a water barrier (if you seal the rear of the speaker the midbass freq's will suffer), you should also be able to get them any local audio shop. i had my amp under the passenger seat, you could also mount it to the panel that covers the heater assembly under the hood if it fits there. the smugglers box will work if you don't plan on running subs (amp will get hotter then). in my opinion the sub belongs up front, it will really add depth to your soundstage. sub frequencies are non-dirrectional but things around it will resonate making it seem dirrectional, if you put the subs in the rear you'll know it's back there, by having it in the front the trunk area will act as a second chamber creating true non-dirrectional bass. it's all about the in car harmonics.

I mounted my amps on a board that is under the carpet wedged between the front wheel wells. You could screw the board down but I didn't wanting to avoid putting in holes in the car the way I did it there are only 8-10 holes in the carpet thats it.

thanks for the info! 4x6 in the rear sounds fine seeing as how its stock size, currently there is nothing back there.
what do you guys run for subs? How about a head unit that looks good in an SC...its getting harder to find one that sort of matches...doesn't look too flashy? Its too bad my 4 yr old Alpine CD is acting up. bell, i like the phrase ' in car harmonics' exactly! i can't wait! awesome sound in my awesome sounding 911, truly the best of two worlds!

Steve W...just read that older/wonderful thread again..I damaged my stock 6 1/2 seperates Focal tweeter due to some very high dB..it was needed to give me a BLAST when doing some long legs/600-1,000mi. on my previous BigBig Ride..so I'm going to order some T90KF tweeters..thanks for the rekindle..
...and I still have to install some of bell's electronics to help my stage problem..It seems like I'm going to have to drive further than Akron to get another audio critique from bell. IMO, 911 audio tuning is important........Ron

You will like the T90KFs much better than those titanium minis you used to have. Much smoother and natural, not as shrill and metallic. Imagine Kevlar vs titanium. The T90s though have a huge magnet, and will necessitate cutting some of the sheetmetal behind it so you can rear mount behind the panel and set a tilt to the mounting angle. But it is well worth it. Good luck!

I inherited the Moch-1 rear panel (Batmobile) enclosure when I bought my 72 Targa a few years ago. It was designed for 4.5 - 5" seperates, which were blown. I replaced them with a set of Infinity Kappa 5" components, with the crossovers mounted inside the enclosure and 300hz bass blockers. Up front I have a set of MB Quart 6.5" referenz components in the door panels. My car didn't come with door pockets, so that wasn't an issue.
I used to have a JBL 400 watt 4 channel mounted in the trunk, but had a ground loop problem that Rod Birch (www.caraudiodynamics.com) diagnosed correctly to the amp, so I am now driving all the speakers off of the head unit (Pioneer DEH-P7000R). The forward-facing rear speakers and the Hollywood Bowl effect of the Targa glass make adjusting the sound staging between the component sets a tad challenging, but I like the high end of the range (I'm a big jazz/blues listener) so this isn't a major problem for me. I would like to get more lows out of the 6.5" mb quarts, so if anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it. Would adding some kind of enclosure behind them assist? I have also been toying with building a fiberglass enclosure to replace the passenger side wooden footrest that would hold a 10" sub ( and provide a passenger foot massage in the bargain). Back to the Moch-1 Batmobile enclosure - I am one of those who likes the appearence of this, but it is a matter of personal likes and dis-likes. If anyone cares to look, you can see a shot of my car with the enclosure just visible through the glass in Wayne's German Autofest pictures (Pic #195 - i think it's on page 2).

Thanks Kevin. BTW, for all those who want pretty damn strong bass without subs, check out the Focal Utopia 7"s. I have the kevlar version of the 7"s and if I don't need to turn it up really loud, I can do without my pair of JL10s. They have a long voice coil x-max, which means they will almost pump out as much bass as a pair of 8"s.

Right now I have the PO's 4x6's in the rear deck. They are Kenwoods and sound okay but start to distort at higher listening levels even with my stock Charleston. What should I replace them with (keep it somewhat economical...I'm between jobs).
How different are the amps? If I get a generic 300 watt amp will I really notice the difference as compared to a "good" one? Better put, keeping the stock speaker holes, what would you guys drop in? What about an okay amp? As far as a CD player/receiver, I guess I'll drop about $150...any suggestions?

stay away from the real cheap amps like boss, pyramid, pyle, and there are many others...basically you get what you pay for. for a decent "cheap" amp expect to pay around $200.
the real cheap amps are going to be prone to serious engine noise which you don't want. any decent coaxial speaker will work fine with just a radio and will be even better with an amp but you will be limited somewhat as to what kind of volume you'll be able to achieve. $150 will let you get a basic pioneer cd player with rca out and detatchable face, i like pioneer for their durability and they never skip if installed securely. just remember your audio system will only be as good as it's weakest link, if you can find a better radio/amp used you'll be better off. but i would by the door speakers brand new for the warranty since they are usually what fail first. hope this helps you.

I've got the Kenwood excelon separate speakers and I think they're a good compromise between the cheapies and the super high ends like the Focals. The are also extremely light, I wonder if they were designed for the McLaren F1 car's Kenwood system.

Iamfoofoo:
I wanted a conservative looking head unit for my 84 -- one that sort of matched the spartan interior but still had sufficient sound quality to make the twisties that much more fun! I ended up buying the Blaupunkt Heidelberg. I know Blaupunkt's reputation is pretty middle-of-the-road these days, but the look of the Heidelberg, and its reasonable cost, is what sold me (along with its fairly decent sound reproduction). It has some graphics on it, but most can be eliminated using a menu. It looks great in the dash...not too flashy. Here's a picture: Also, you can add a steering wheel remote that allows you to keep both hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road. Are there better head units out there? Absolutely. All things considered (price, looks, sound quality), however, I'm pretty happy with the unit. Just my $.02. Scott

Just another opinion:
I have Boston Pro Series components in the front doors, Boston 5 1/4" in the rear and a 8" JL sub in a custom made box that I put behind the pass seat. The box is almost invisable (and it is very easy to remove) as it is covered in the same carpet material as the Porsche. All of this is powered by a Kenwood Excelon X817 which flips over (automatic) when not in use- it looks like the face was removed. The 817 controls the Kenwood amp... a 501 (4 channel, 300w) and the whole system sounds fantastic. I had the amp mounted in the trunk, close to the battery which helps with power delivery and wire routing. The 817 powers the rear speakers only, the amp powers the components and the sub. I can be cruising down the highway at 80mph with the top down and the stereo sounds clear and loud.
